Analysis Summary
Performed authenticity
The deliberate construction of "realness" — confessional tone, casual filming, strategic vulnerability — designed to lower your guard. When someone appears unpolished and honest, you evaluate their claims less critically. The spontaneity is rehearsed.
Goffman's dramaturgy (1959); Audrezet et al. (2020) on performed authenticity
Worth Noting
Positive elements
- This video provides a detailed breakdown of the physical modularity and port selection of the T480, which is highly useful for budget-conscious buyers or students.
Be Aware
Cautionary elements
- The use of 'revelation framing' (the 'last great' machine) creates an artificial sense of urgency to acquire older hardware before it disappears.

many of the ThinkPad fraternity believe this to be the last truly great ThinkPad with all the customizability serviceability and robustness that we all associate with the brand and I've spent the last couple of weeks with it what a remarkable machine we really have to talk about it but before that guys I'm really trying to hit 100,000 subscribers so if you wouldn't mind hitting that button it genuinely would mean the absolute well to me thank you so much for the support for a bit of context I've run the ThinkPad t480s as my daily notebook for the past 2 years now which is a thin and light cut down version of the regular t480 in many ways that I think are actually important that machine is fantastic and has as you can tell by the footage had a lot of usage out of it it's been a phenomenal laptop that I've taken to work with me used in all kinds of places and is going really strong still after all these years I wasn't the first owner of this thing the t480 is similar in size but a bit thicker and heavier as you can imagine not being the s model but despite that it's still incredibly portable and easy to carry around in a small backpack without the need for a dedicated laptop bag I have noticed the slight difference in bulk mostly really when moving around and checking notes on my laptop as I go but there are a couple of key reasons why this laptop is heavier and thicker firstly the build materials feel far more robust the textures feel more rubberized and tough against the elements funly enough I'm pretty sure I bought this thing from like a company that recycles old office and school computers and that's exactly what this kind of thing would be really good at likely to be deployed in the hundreds if not thousands businesses need laptops that can take a beating because people just don't care about their stuff and this is perfect for that kind of thing even repping its own marks and scratches though it's in better condition than my S model you can find parts for this pretty easily online and if you look closely you can actually see that of all the parts that you might see on Modern laptops like keyboards that are built into the palmrest OR completely closed off and sealed screen units a lot of this is modular and more granular on the t480 if you break something it's more likely for you to Simply go out and buy a part and switch it out without having to replace a whole chunk of the entire laptop better for the wallet and better for the environment it means you can also upgrade certain parts to ones from other SKS if you really want to and truly make your t480 your own this is not a sentiment shared on many of the newer think pads even if to most people they are the better looking machines and that includes the internal components in memory and storage but compared to the t48s which has a single dim slot and an M2 slot this has fully interchangeable memory and a dedicated 2 and 1/2 in hard drive or SSD slot you could load this thing up with 64 gigs of RAM and terabytes of SSD storage if you wanted to with pretty much no dramas throw in the internal battery that pairs nicely with the hot swappable external one and you have a far more versatile notebook compared to not only the ThinkPad t480s model but any modern laptop as a whole because those machines are so closed and unuser serviceable this by comparison almost feels like a desktop in its modularity though not quite obviously and it isn't like this laptop is like Bonkers old either uh the T 480 is 6 years old this is actually a much higher spec model than my t48s with the i7 8550u 16 gigs of DDR full memory and a 512 gig SSD running Windows 11 Pro it's not ancient by any stretch of the imagination I only paid about 270 quid for it which without a charger is pretty reasonable actually it's cheaper than a lot of mid-ranged smartphones these days the iio is identical to the t48s but it's just sort of laid out a bit different ly so we have two USB 3 ports fulls size HDMI fulls size SD full RJ45 a 3 and 1/2 mil combo port and two USB C's one being for charging and the other being Thunderbolt 3 with a DOT connector built in that's why it's a little bit wider that's way more than you get on a lot of modern machines and the handy features like the track point the fingerprint scanner and the Privacy cover for the webcam that are all built in add up to make not only a machine that's powerful enough for everyday tasks and a light bit of gaming if you really want to and a machine that has plenty of ports but it's also just really convenient and easy to use all right the screen might not be as premium uh in color accuracy brightness sharpness as sort of a Macbook or any of that but let's remember the prices we're talking about here and it's still 1080p which I think for the 14in form factor which is my new favorite form factor of laptop is pretty much perfect so text is nice and crisp videos and games look good and let's face it again this isn't me to be a crazy high-end device that says this is more than fast enough for pretty much any daily tasks that the average person might do web browsing watching videos researching writing all at the same time if you want to this is one of those machines that almost epitomizes the office machine in that sense so I'm not using it to edit any of these videos you know I did use my T4 ATS which had the I5 model to do some basic 10p chopping up in Da Vinci resolve and you could definitely do that on this too but I wouldn't use it for you know making four or five videos a week with this thing without a dedicated GPU with heaps of video memory this is never going to be that sort of desktop replacement style laptop and it's not meant to be though that said it does have the Thunderbolt 3 Port so you could in theory hook up an external GPU like one of those dedicated boxes you can buy let me know in the comments if you've tried this on any laptop by the way I've never played with an external GPU before so I can't comment on how well it pairs with the t480 but it's an interesting concept I think some people think office machine just means that it can't do anything beyond creating Powerpoints and you know that might have been the case 10 15 years ago but not for these kinds of laptops they're pretty decent and they run games relatively well computers have come a long way since I had my first laptop back in the day and of course this being 6 years old there are plenty newer models too saying that though the new school totally closed machines tend to look sleeker with thinner bezels Slimmer profiles which most people are totally interested in over this and I get why but it also results in laptops that if you break can cost an eyering amount to fix I would hate to think how much I'd have to spend on something like my MacBook Pro if I ever broke the screen actually I do know that answer as a former repair technician and it would be more than this entire ThinkPad it's actually terrifying I've had to deliver that bad news to plenty of people who have accidentally sort of trodden on or knocked their Microsoft Surface or MacBook Pro off a desk and let me tell you I've had some absolute pelters upon giving the repair quote I mentioned that my machine is running Windows 11 there and I'm sure there are already heaps of people typing in the comments or have already typed in the comments that I really need to move over to Linux and that Linux is the future Linux is the way Linux is the best OS and fair enough I mean I don't really like Windows either to be quite honest but I also don't get on with Linux in any capacity and I'm not about to hack and Tosh my machine anytime soon windows can get in the way it can be very invasive at times but it also supports everything that I download all my software all of my games that I want to run on my ThinkPad and if a dis drive Linux works better for you then power to you install whatever you want it's your machine and you can do whatever you want with it generally the sentiment is that mod think pads have started to become well more of those closed off machines that you might buy from HP Dell apple and so on not all of the newest models are totally solded down or unupgraded but they are a grand departure from what made these things fantastic think pads are built to last built to be easily serviced and repaired almost like the people's laptop that's what so many people including myself associate the ThinkPad brand with and this is the perfect example of one of those computers the ThinkPad t480 is my instant recommendation to anyone who wants a cheap and cheerful laptop that can be easily fixed easily upgraded and Will Survive the hustle and bustle of everyday life and have plenty of IO even in this landscape of uber Slimline machines is it perfect no of course not but it's a terrific machine and I've been convinced this is the last truly great ThinkPad

I absolutely adore ThinkPads, but it's clear that they don't quite represent what they once used to. Sure, there are modern notebooks out there with the repairability and robustness we could all do with, but it's pretty commonly thought among the ThinkPad community that this was the last truly great ThinkPad. Ladies and gentlemen, the ThinkPad T480 in 2024.
