“Be aware that the 'comparison' to Vivo and Oppo is a rhetorical frame to elevate the product's status; the video is a sponsored-style showcase of a prototype rather than an objective head-to-head test.”

Ask yourself: “Did I notice what this video wanted from me, and did I decide freely to say yes?”

Association

Pairing a new idea, product, or person with something you already feel positively or negatively about. The goal is to transfer your existing emotional response without any logical connection. It works below conscious awareness.

Signals

The content features a well-known tech reviewer (Bobby Tonelli) providing a hands-on demonstration of a prototype with natural, unscripted verbal artifacts and specific situational context. The speech exhibits authentic human cadence, personal disclosure of sponsorship, and real-time observation that AI cannot currently replicate with this level of specificity.

Natural Speech Patterns Transcript contains natural stutters, self-corrections ('PGY Texone', 'PGY Techch'), and conversational fillers ('All right, guys', 'Now, I don't know').
Personal Anecdotes and Context The narrator mentions specific physical interactions with a prototype unit, personal experience with Zeiss/Hasselblad partnerships, and location-specific testing at Marina Bay Sands.
Subjective Evaluation The narrator provides nuanced opinions on 'sweet spots' for sharpness and specific hardware tactile feel (buttons, shutter release) that go beyond spec-sheet reading.

Worth Noting

Positive elements

  • The video provides a clear physical demonstration of the RetroVa's ergonomics and a first look at the accompanying app's film simulation interface.

Be Aware

Cautionary elements

  • The use of 'pre-production' status as a shield against deep criticism while simultaneously providing a strong purchase recommendation via Kickstarter.

Should Vivo and Opal be worried? Well, according to PGY Tech, maybe so. This is an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and this photography kit is pretty [music] much the same that you're getting from Vivo and OPPO, but for the iPhone. All right, guys. Full disclosure, PGY Tech sent this out for me to review. Now, this is not a production unit. This is a prototype, so I'm not going to go full in-depth with it, but this is impressive. Now, if you don't know this, PGY Techch, as I mentioned, makes the same kit for Vivo and OPPO. Now, I don't know if the lens is different because one is a Zeiss lens for Vivo and OPPO has a partnership with Hasselblad. This is PGY Texone lens, but it's the same 2.3 times teleconverter telephoto lens and everything looks very, very similar on the outside. Obviously, it's got a little bit more of a retro design. The app that you pair with gives you a lot of the same functionality. Now, I don't know about the AI implementations, all that. But this is this is really impressive for an iPhone. So, let's walk you through it real quick here. The housing is going to give you more of that sort of retro like a vibe to it. On the top of it plate, it looks like a little bit more retro as well. The switch dial, the buttons all feel really good. The shutter release is also a little bit raised. Everything feels pretty premium for being one of these photography kits. Now, the lens is metal itself. It is really wellmade. Is an spherical lens according to what I'm seeing here. 2.35 times the same as we're getting from Vivo and OPPO is in this locks on here and it does stay in pretty securely. And this grip also does come off as well. It's a Bluetooth grip which by the way looks like you can put an SD card there as well and you can charge it via USBC so you actually get storage inside of this which is something that we don't see from the Vivo and OPPO options out there. So PGY Techch is putting their own flavor on this and I think they've done a tremendous job. But what is it like when it comes to image quality? That means we have to go into the PGY tech app and play around with that. And I'll tell you some of the similarities we're seeing in Vivo and OPPO carry over to this. You have a 235mm, 400 mm, 600, and 960 pre-production, but just giving you an idea of how it performs. And I'm going to take a photo of this building here and the details. Now, the close focusing on this may not be as good as Vivo and Opal from my experience. I think you have to be a little bit further out. Again, this could be software related, but it's okay. Let me take a photo of Marina Bay Sands at 235, 400, 600, 960. Not bad. Very, very impressive. Now, one of the cool things about this app though, too, is you can also go film simulations on this where you have various different film options. C200 from Muji, you've got Velvia, Eterna, Pro Standard, Kodak 200. Um, so you've got a few options in here, which is really nice. And you can play around with those colors. Let me take a photo of this boat going by here. This is at 960, 400. Now, based on my findings, the 235 and the 400 are going to be the sweet spot in terms of sharpness and optical performance. Once you start getting to 600 and 900 plus, that's where you're going to see it be a little bit more challenging in terms of sharpness and AI or the processing from the app will have to kick in on that. But this is very cool. It gives you an option, an option we never had before. Has a pouch, has a lanyard. If you're in the market to have something like this to get that longer range and take advantage of this really cool app, by the way, you can use this app without the lens and it's absolutely fantastic. Gives you some really nice film simulations. PGY Tech's done a great job. There's a Kickstarter link below. Do check it out. Again, I'm using pre-production. I don't want to say too much on this right now. First impressions, this is nice. When the production unit does come in, I'll put it against the Vivo and we'll see how that performs because I think a lot of you will be very interested in that. So with that guys, if you like the video, like, subscribe. Thank you for the support. Greatly appreciate it and I'll chat to you all very, very soon. Bye.

#iphone17promax #iphone17pro #PGYTech #PGYtechRetroVa Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max finally catching up to vivo and Oppo in the accessory game? In this video, I’m taking a first look at the PGYTECH RetroVa, a new photography kit that transforms your iPhone into a dedicated street photography rig. This isn't just a grip—it’s a full system with a 2.35x telephoto lens, Bluetooth shutter control, and a dedicated app that brings classic film simulations (Fujifilm, Kodak, and more) to iOS. PGYTECH sent over this prototype unit to see if it can rival the photography kits we’ve seen from Android giants like vivo and Oppo. Does the external lens actually improve image quality? How do the film simulations look? Let’s dive in. 🔗 CHECK IT OUT ON KICKSTARTER: https://bit.ly/4ae5sbC WHAT’S IN THIS VIDEO: 0:00 - Intro: Vivo & Oppo Competitor for iPhone? 0:26 - PGYTECH RetroVa Design & Build Quality 0:50 - The App: Retro Vibes & AI Features 1:16 - Hardware Specs: 2.35x Telephoto Lens & Grip 1:51 - Camera Test: Zoom Ranges (235mm - 960mm) 2:35 - Film Simulations Test (Fuji C200, Kodak, etc.) 3:15 - Final Thoughts & Conclusion
