Lex Fridman on Tom Waits interview: He's a dream guest, but I've given up on it

Uh I told you off my uh one of my maybe the music guest that's a dream guest is Tom Weights. [sighs] I've wanted to talk to Tom Weights for a very long time and I've gone through different periods of you've met me at a point in my life where I've given up on it a little bit and >> that's what's going to happen once >> once you give up on it. It's going to happen. >> Yeah. Yeah. Um >> why Tom Weights won't be on your podcast. >> Exactly. [laughter] Exactly. Dude, this is this is my this is my moment. >> Tom, come come here. Let's do it. I want to see it. I >> I'm such a a fan of like the Zappa like artistry on the on the musical front, which Tom has, but I am a I'm a sucker for great lyrics. lyrics to me is such a big part of great songs. And and he's another example. He has a song called uh Martha. It's about a love story that didn't work out and it's an older man calling the woman that he was in love with and basically reminiscing about like time, you know, thinking about like what what would have happened if it worked out, that kind of thing. And then, you know, I love that song for a long time. And you know uh at some point I found out that he wrote that when he was in his early 20s and you realize similar with the Beatles like this these guys somehow are able to capture the human condition so masterfully and they're kids. >> Yes. This I don't get it. I don't understand it. I can't speak for Tom Weights but in the Beatles case they went to Hamburgg. They spent time on their own. They played cover gigs that were eight hours long and they live lived. >> Yeah. They've lived >> they lived life. >> Yeah. >> It's not like not like kids today. [laughter] Now you're on a porch.
