“Be aware that the creator's method of 'cleaning' cards with pantyhose is a form of conservation that some purists or grading companies might consider borderline alteration, despite his transparent description of it.”

Ask yourself: “What would I have to already believe for this argument to make sense?”

Worth Noting

Positive elements

  • This video provides a realistic look at the financial math of sports card grading, including the 'upcharge' phenomenon at PSA when a card's value exceeds its service level.

Be Aware

Cautionary elements

  • The casual normalization of surface cleaning (using pantyhose) as a non-altering 'hack' to increase grade scores.

What's up, YouTube? Been a while. Uh, just some quick pickups, a one card PSA reveal, and quick thoughts on the whole I appeal NBA sticker stuff. Um, I may or may not be able to go to the Philly show, but if I do, may try a little experiment to see like what they look for in those stickers. Okay, so for pickups, I got a Plane Days Vince Carter Fleer Autoraphics. Little streaky, but he's been uh getting really popular. The best dunker of all time. couple 61 uh Ed Matthews, Eddie Matthews, and WDY Ford. These are super crisp. Uh no creases, and they just look nice and got them for a good price. [snorts] 255 Bman's, a Hank Haron, and another Eddie Matthews. Um again, got these at a good price, so decided to buy them. Okay, next card. I'll never own the Ted Williams version of this because it's so freaking expensive. But this one looked okay. Um I don't know. He's in a Yankees uniform. The Wilson Franks. There's like a stain over here. And I'm going to just call that hot dog juice. I did the sniff test and it does smell like a um that has that vintage card smell. Couldn't smell any hot dog juice cuz it's what 70ish years old. But yeah, I'll pick these up if I can find them for a good price. cool card. And got this graded PSA true photo 20 24 Otani. Uh these remind me of the 53 Bowman colors. Another one came up for auction and I probably paid a little bit too much for this, but it's okay. Okay, PSA card one card reveal. So, I said I wasn't going to send this into PSA and just keep it raw, but when I looked it over, man, it looked good. It just had a little bit of wax on the back and I was thinking if I can just get a panty hose and wipe it off. It came right off actually. I don't know if that's considered altering if you know I guess I would think altering is more using like some kind of liquid. I just literally took the panty hose and went in a circle for a little while and the the wax did end up coming off which was crazy. It's obviously a little OC left to right. And I got a PSA 8. So, this is a massive win. I thought it was going to be a a five anywhere from a five to seven max. Um, when I wiped it, I don't know if you can tell, but uh there's a little bit of kind of like a not a stain, but you can tell where the wax used to be. Other than that, and the slight offc centering left to right, it was almost an immaculate condition, especially the corners. So, super happy with an eight. Uh, I paid like a little over 4K for this Jordan collection that I bought. And this is worth what, like give or take $2500 now. So, I'm uh I'm going to keep track of uh how much kind of I'm into it for and how much I'd be out of it for, but this card is not for sale. I just we'll take off 2500 from the total just as a gauge minus the uh the uh the grading fees. And I did get upcharged for this to 175 bucks. Okay, so NBA stickers. I'm just curious like who actually benefits like for the dealers. The dealers definitely benefit because they can just charge a premium. The collectors definitely doesn't benefit because you don't want the stickers on there. You can easily find with your own interpretation like what is a high I appeal card. There's a little bit of subjectivity because I think, you know, I think centering is key, but there's also color, registration, clarity, all that fun stuff. Doesn't really the stickers don't benefit the collectors. I was thinking the flippers, like does it do anything for them? I actually think it's negative for the flippers because they are looking to move cards fairly quickly and it's going to be harder for them to move at that premium. And maybe it's kind of like that Scarlet A just in terms of flipping. Like how easy is it to move? Um for flippers, it would actually benefit the collectors. Maybe like if they have a card that they're willing to move and they can't get rid of it for that high high premium, maybe they'll get rid of it for the high comp or the high a higher price. Um, I've had some situations where I've seen some high I appeal cards at shows and I've actually seen some NBA stickers and they are willing to get rid of it for the higher comp. Um, and I'll gladly snatch those up as long as it looks good to me. So, yeah, the Philly show if I can go I don't know how it works with NBA with the drop off if it's a one day thing, but figured I'd try a test run to see what their parameters are of giving out those stickers. Um, I don't know. It might sell out for using them. I I just kind of wanna I like the experiment. So, we'll see. So, first card. I think this has a chance of a sticker. It's pretty well centered. The color is good. The clarity is a little It's hard to tell, but it is actually a little bit blurry. There's a little bit of like that wax black dot on the back. Um, but this has a shot. This one's a tossup. We'll see what happens with this Mickey Manel. This one, I don't think it'll get a sticker. It's slightly off top to bottom, but this is one of the better like color and registration Sandy Kofaxes that I've seen in a super low grade. There's a bit of like wax on the back top right, which is probably going to prevent it from getting a sticker. But again, I just don't know what their parameters are. And these cards, I don't have really any intention of selling them. It's just well aside from the copax um I'm just more out of curiosity. Will it get a sticker or not? And what really are the parameters other than centering? This will I think has a pretty good chance. It's pretty well centered top to bottom, left to right, just ever so slightly diamond cut in a way with this top box. Um it's a new label. The top corner has like a small issue, but it's hard to tell. Most of the 1961s are really really offc center and this one's pretty nice. So I will say I think this one will get a sticker. Um and the color and registration is really nice on this last card. So first thing you think left to right is good. Top to bottom is obviously off. But for the 1957s they are notoriously offc centered. I'm actually going for this set. And they usually end up looking like this. Same with the Bill Russell. Like I think there is a little bit of benefit to maybe getting that NBA sticker um in terms of explanation if people ask because the 1957s in my opinion are actually much worse than the 61s. Um the centering is just so far off that anything that's at least this centered is actually I would think in like the top whatever they call it 1 to 5%. There are better copies of this. This one has no color and registration issues. And the set also is notorious for those fish eyes. No fish eyes on this one. So, let's see. I I'm again, I'm just curious to see what they would give a sticker versus not. And uh I'll just give it a go and kind of use that to judge. I I guess this there's also a thought of like what if NBA gets busy with similar to PSA, their prices will go up. um the standards will get harder. Is it worth using? Probably not. But for people that are looking to unload their cards or have cards that think are super high appeal, then hey, why not do it to um part with the card if they want to get rid of it for either getting more cash on hand or trading into something else. All right, thanks for watching.
