M5 Max Mac: Death Stranding 2 and other Windows game testing

Okay. Hello, good morning and welcome to the stream. Today we are going to be doing a little bit of uh more Windows game testing on the topsp spec uh M5 Max MacBook Pro. So, we are doing Windows game testing most of all and um really came online live to test out uh a couple of specific games that I've heard um I'm now working on a Mac. So this um post popped up on the Mac gaming subreddit. And uh basically this is fix for Death Stranding 2. So Death Running 2 um would have a Mac port unlike the first game which does have a Mac port. Second game didn't have an Mac port announced. We have the Windows version that got released and you would have thought you know Windows version coming out. Maybe they should have uh cross sold it onto the the Mac side. I'm sure that they the there's there's a conversation about it that they've had between Kajjima, his company, and Apple, but um you know, it's still popular game. Still haven't finished the first game. I'm not sure I ever will, but uh um apparently this is working now. So, there are a couple of issues with it. Um it's made by this user called uh David Akh. And I think what's meant to be quite cool about it is that it basically has an exeix which um allows uh certain certain features which um it uh requests access to but doesn't actually u make use of. Right? So if the .exe is modified to um ignore issues here, then it'll actually run on the Mac. But there are a couple of issues that are reported by the the OP. So um apparently water doesn't render correctly and that if you let me see if you um disconnect the controller something about the controller disconnecting then the game will crash or something like that. So it says um basically we need to apply this patch. So I'm doing this for the first time. I just uh downloaded Death Stranding 2. Got my crossover uh bottle here. D2D Metal is the one I'm using. And what we're going to do is modify the game. Okay. So I'll I guess I'll leave a link to this in the description for um this particular fix. Hello sweet dreams uh XYZ. Thank you very much for joining the stream today. Okay, so DS2 fix. We're going to download this uh and it's basically an .exe file containing a bunch of uh it's like a Python script. Okay, so um hopefully this will work in the future. I don't actually know um whether this will last beyond this patch, but yeah, we have this Python script here. Can you edit Can you text edit a Python script? Okay. So, yeah, it's quite detailed. Applies two hex patches to DS2.exe. So, I think it's for this specific uh version number. You know, this is likely to change in the future. So, just FYI. Hopefully, the the the the uh the creator of the fix will be able to um hex patch create this hex patcher again in the future. But um okay so what do we need to do? So that is the whole that is the whole script. Okay it's just hex patcher. Okay so how do we apply it? Let me see how you do it. Um let's have a look at the instructions. I've not actually done this before. So this is the first time. So um let's open a terminal window into this folder. Yeah. So uh how do you do this? Control click. Can I not Can I not open a terminal window into Yeah. How do you do this? Just suddenly become completely useless. Yes, I've heard of Sikaro. I haven't actually used it yet. So, one day I'll to have a go. What do I click on here? Yeah, here we go. Control-click on the folder. Let's open a terminal window here. Okay. Right. So um let's look. We've got the patcher there. Okay. So we need to apply this patch. Okay. So we need to insert here the path to DS2.exe. Okay. So um in my Windows version of Steam, I'm going to go to desk running 2. Okay. Um and we have a path here. So, it's going to be different on your computer because it'll have contained username, but basically it's um it's here. Uh it thinks it's on the C drive, right? But actually, it's in the library common folder. So, um I'm going to make a new tab within here and we're going to go. So, default location in Steam, you need to hold down option key to go to library and then um we need to open up the application support folder. Then we go down to crossover and then bottles. Right. So I've got my bottle here which mine is called steam new or yours is probably called steam and then we'll go into steam new and then go into the C drive users crossover. Actually no we're not doing that. We're going into program files steam and then steam apps then common. and we've got desk starting to here and then we've got DS2. So that's the target exe file that we want to target. Okay, it's going to get info and then we can see the uh the path here. So if you if you select that and and command C, right, let's say we just paste it somewhere like that, it will actually give the full path of that whole thing. Okay, so now we can put it in our terminal and you want to insert between these two straight double quotes. Okay. Okay. So, that gives our folder and then we need to do DS uh we need to insert the .exe file, not just the uh the the path. DS2.exe. Okay. So, that's like the Python script. Let's see if that runs. Target creating backup. Okay. So, did it did it create a backup? Where's the backup? That work? Wow. Where did the backup go? Well, hopey that worked. Um, is it creating backup that's trending to on the beach the application? Did it actually work? Let's see if that file got modified. Oh, no. I have to go back to where I was. library application support crossover bottles steam new. Uh here we are. So maybe it's a good idea to put a shortcut to this common folder. We've got test stranding 2. Um I don't see a modification of that file. Let me see the error message. File not found. No such file as Okay. So, um I need to also put the path of the actual disc in here. So, maybe what I'll do is I'll get info instead of doing it like this. Did they didn't copy the Macintosh HD part? Let me just uh because the users folder I guess I could put I almost get a bit confused with Mac Mac OS paths and terminal. I'm not very good at uh command line interfaces. So okay that okay that just did the same thing but I think I can do a thing where I use the squiggle line. Right. So yeah, we're just patching Death Stranding 2 with this uh hex patcher. Can I do this? Yeah. File not found. Okay. So I need to give what I should do is probably give the full full volume path as well. Okay. So that should be Do I need to do that? Do I have to write Macintosh HD? Surely that's not correct, right? Let me see. Myintosh HD. Do I have to do that? No such file. Do I have to escape out the Do I have to escape the spaces? Is that what I have to do? Cuz that would be a real That would be a real pain. Does terminal path require um uh what is it? Backslash to escape spaces Mac OS H. Just send the path to chat. Yeah. Okay. So, what was the what was the command I was trying to do? I was trying to do uh this, right? Yeah, I should have TPT. Okay. Um, fix this. Single quotes, not double quotes. Okay. Yeah. So, let's try single quotes instead. So, I need to fix the single drop the exe inside the terminal instead. Yes. We see the cut. What cut? Okay. File not found. Okay. I could I could um just drop the I could drop the exe in the terminal instead, which is a good idea. Uh I'll do that after I do this. I'm so bad at I'm so bad at doing this. Like I I I kind of hate command line interfaces. Why can't they just make this easier? No such file directory. Okay, sure. So, let's just like drop it in. So, what is it? Um, Python. So, yeah. So, the the pie is there. Then we drop in the exe. Yeah. Okay. So, it didn't require Oh, this did this escape? No, it didn't escape anything. Okay. So, drag and drop the exe in there. Now, I've got a backup exe. Okay. All good. I think we did. I think we did it. I think we did it, guys. Okay. So, back to my Steam thingy. Okay. Okay. So, just be aware that this if this fix does work right, then basically it won't um it it won't work with future .exe patches. So, if this gets patched, it did escape the space. Okay. Yeah. So, yeah, no install graphics blah blah blah blah blah. Oh, finally. Nixie's port. Typical the typical screen that we want. Okay. All right. All right, let's run this at 1080p first and then see how we get on. Quality mode. All right. Okay, let's let's let's try 1080p first. I know it's M5 Max machine. We'll go to 4K um later. Hey, it launches better than before when it just crashed. Right. So, as far as I understand it, it basically crashed because um uh it was looking for certain graphics features which weren't being found, but they were not they were being flagged up, but also like not being used either. So, it requested these features, but then apparently doesn't require them. But also, if you disconnect the controller, apparently the game crashes. So, that's one thing. British English option. Good. Okay. Good. Let's go. Excellent. Game difficulty please make it please story level. Yep. Thank you. Let's lose the baby. New baby control settings. vertical invert. There's a visual bug that water does winter. Okay, we'll see about that. Hi. Top five British dramas. I don't actually know what what is a drama anyway. It's like I guess anything that's not a comedy, right? Or not action. I can't really think of any British dramas. While demons can affect anyone, those born under conceptual good connection to the beach, including cancer, Pisces, satas, and dolphins are said to be more susceptible to the condition. Oh, okay, great. So, I'm a cancer, so therefore I'm going to be more I'm more inclined to to whatever die. Are there any tools that show RAM usage while in game? Yes. Um well is it shows the game usage of the RAM? I haven't I discovered a good tool which overlays system usage of RAM. So if you find one, please let me know. British British TV shows that I like. Let me think. I haven't watched any good ones lately. Consume so much American content that I don't really know. Like I I can't even you know think they're stranding [ __ ] things. It's this game looks nuts. Why are the graphics so good? Pre-rendered. Is it pre-render? Is it pre-rendered or in engine? Pre-rendered. Yeah, but I can imagine it used the the engine to to make this. Yeah, it just smells a good engine. It's the same engine used in Horizon Forbidden West fight cuz I tested that yesterday. No, I tested it the day before yesterday. I'm still working on this. Okay, I'm not running at 4K. You see, I'm It's rendering at 1080p. Uh, and it's up quality settings. I mean 1080p 1080p quality high. So maybe put on medium. It looks incredible at this resolution. Proceed along the bridge. Let's just go down a ridge a little bit then I'll set a little bit. That's really cool that the dual sensors make noise. I mean, um, I didn't experience that in a lot. >> Frame gen makes more like it. I I've turned frame gen off I hope Apple crate translation. That game looks amazing. Yeah, gen adds latency, slowing down a bit. So, it's like a very variable 30 30 to 50. My legs are a bit wobbly. Is that what it looks like in the normal game? Looks slightly janky. Aerial camera. Whoa. Oh, that's really zoomed out. I've just got my instinct to have both L2 and R2 held down this entire time. Every time I open up what YouTuber are live, I'm only live for a few hours a day. Okay, so at the most. I wasn't live yesterday, was I? The day is blown into one. Today is Wednesday, right? Wednesday. Yeah. Got to start initiating returns for these things. Death String is kind of working. like haven't got that far into um the game. Apparently there's rendering issues. And then also if you disconnect the controller there's problems, but you know it boots and I can load it up using that using the power of crossover and game 14 toolkit. We are playing death running too. So there's there's a good argument to say like, you know, why why why bother with a native port when you can kind of play it now, right? Like Mac gamers, right? Are you really going to wait another year or let's say they announce a port that's running too like right now, right? And it comes out in a year. I mean, it's already been like over a year since the console release, right? And then now we have the Windows release. Yeah. Am I keeping any machine beyond the Neo? Uh, no. Quick, I'm I'm happy with my M3 Max MacBook Pro. I was thinking about selling something. Pretty damn shaky. I should really get rid of some more this there. I've got too many to test with if recent games is an indication probably M1 Pro. Yeah, M1 Pro plays the first game. Fine. I haven't finished I ain't finished the first game yet, so I don't think I ever will. Have you ever compared the native port running warning to Windows version server? No, I haven't. So I guess spoiler ending one the baby the BB becomes Lou gets a name. pretty impressive for some 20p upscale. Yeah. Is the cooling system enough for playing games or we need external ones? Uh, it's fine. The the problem with um the Max is that um the cooling systems aren't really compatible with a lot of the third party coolers because of the design because most of the heat comes out through the hinge, right? So, um, whereas, uh, and they don't have intakes at the bottom, whereas most laptop coolers trying to feed into the intake on the bottom of the laptop. And, um, that that same logic doesn't apply to Max. If you're on 16 in, it's pretty good, but 14 in will throttle. Yeah. Can I test deadlock on it? Not planning to today. It's raining in the desert. Yeah, we're on the high priest at the moment and it was at 50 at the beginning. This is a treacherous ground. This is like the last environment you want to be in a baby pion holding a baby in the front. Can you put the baby in a case or something? Yeah. Rain's in the desert. So, last time I tried Deadlock on Windows, uh, Windows Deadlock on a Mac, it was not a good experience on my M3 Max. It was very poor. So, um, you probably can't really ditch Windows for these life service games. Deadlock will work through crossover, but it's just not it's just not ideal. Okay, I'm going to try um now that it's raining. Okay, let's just try like a slightly um a slightly better graphics preset. If we go medium and we go performance, right? So, balanced, right? Medium and balanced. Let's try that. Okay, the not medium. That still looks amazing. Medium balanced preset. But hopefully we're not going to dip under 30. class myself like thighs of steel just like sprinting up a mountain with a baby like 20 kilo pack worse. Yeah, we're still getting we're still dips under 30. Okay, well that ain't perfect, you know. Whoa. Go there. Someone's a witch again. Yeah, it does depend on 30. It is a This is a compatibility layer that we're talking about here. A camera don't really need that much FPS. Yes, you don't need it, but it's just nice. I I know that if this was a Mac port, then we'd be getting we'd be we we we would get double performance easily. And the M5 Max, as powerful as it is, doesn't want to brute force this enough. I guess I'll just go along this ridge. Turn on Nvidia reflex latency reduction. Okay, let's try that. I think that's on, isn't it? Reflex. What's this? Nvidia reflexes boost enable plus boost. Okay, let's try that. So, is that like a broken bridge do I have to cross? Yeah, boost. How to get there? So, I need to kind of beine in this direction without like falling to death. Boost is reduce both CPU and GPU latency. Okay, is Nvidia knows all the Nvidia settings. Is the buffet GPU or CPU? Uh, you know what? I test a lot of games that I don't actually know how to answer that question. Okay, first graphical bug I saw was like rain rain artifact water artifact. So big sheets of something. Where to go? If there's native port, the game will stick to 60 fps easily. Yes. Let's go down a more gradual path this way. Down this ridge line. Try exclusive full screen. Yeah, good idea. Um, exclusive full screen doesn't doesn't do a lot on Mac. Yeah, this. Oh. Ouch. I didn't think the baby would have survived that in real life. And GitHub has mentioned that the game checks for depth bounds test supported on a 5080 laptop 600p everything max no frame gen DLSS quality get between 90 and 100 FPS. Yeah. So we are a far cry from that plus graphical artifacts. I wonder if that can be fixed. Deathbounds test support is only supported on Apple 10. Yes, but I've seen screenshots high K web um uh of uh N format running this game. So, it doesn't necessarily require depth bound test. That's why works on M2. Okay. Yeah, it checks for it but doesn't use it. Got it. So, we're in medium balance at the moment. Oh, I can't really hear the fans due to me using a treadmill right now, but it's not loud. No. Are these the BTS? Can you check in 720p? This is 720p. Well, it's actually less than that. 632p. going to fix those graphical glitches. I mean, I'm not sure that's under Crossover's team's remitt. Does Apple care regarding projects like Crossover or they fine with them? >> I think Apple do have lines of communication between the game porting token and crossover team because crossover receives >> game porting token. I sold my Xbox Series X the other day because I just never used it because I I I really thought a few years ago that I'd be playing a lot more Xbox Game Plus games, but um apparently yeah, that never really happened. Okay, so the first enemy is obviously got back turned. So, can we take him out? And we had a gunshot. Have I done test running one on MX5? I mean it all I can say is that it's it's um phenomenally well optimized. I think we're on story mode difficulty which is why this is very easy. Just shooting rubber bullets. Headshotting people with rubber bullets as if that couldn't kill them, too. Whoa. That'll teach you to sneak up on me. >> Why don't these guys have guns? Yeah. So, so M1 Mac 8 GB can run the game phenomenally well. Um, you know, put together as an engine on the Mac. So, it's phenomenally well put together. So, there's not really that much of a reason to test these games. This this game, however, is like kind of the limit. You know, we're running this through a translation there. The game's not really supported by Crossover. It's not really a a proper indication of the power of crossover. Is this the wall? The Mexico, the maga wall. Okay. Graphical issues are plenty here. At least the intro rendered beautifully, but there are issues. Is this meant to be water? Is this water? And that's why there's fish here, right? I'm trying to cross a river right now. Oh. Yeah, it's worth connecting up to your TV, but you know, I think I'm what I'm going to do is just transfer my saves from the map store version back to Steam and then complete it on Basite. So let's try and get this one working. So this is a mod for Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered, which is currently on sale. Um, so let's try to get it to work. So let's uh run. So what I'll do is I've downloaded Horizon Launcher and we're going to try running this community server from there. So do a little bit more game testing. Uh let's see if we can run this through wine or not. Uh, can I get Modern Warfare working? Because like Modern Warfare Remastered 2017. Can I actually launch this game? Because I think it's a um I'm think it's an antitude game, right? But you can't play I didn't realize that this was playable. Is it It's classic like classic game. So, apparently it works really well through DXMT. I haven't tried it though. Extra might work better through TXM actually. It's a bit laggy for this menu sometimes. So, so there's a VKD3D which is a Vulcan DirectX9 thing which um I haven't got working yet properly on my Mac but apparently that improves performance a lot for these 32. It's also Rosetta X87 which is meant to improve performance of 32-bit games on a Mac like a lot. So, um potentially those two things could make games like New Vegas run better on a Mac. I've seen some reports of that. I haven't got it working myself because I've been waiting for kind of crossover support for that to happen. Okay, this is taking a long time to load. I hope something is actually happening. I can see the progress. I can see the progress on moving. So, something's happening. It's just not much to, you know, talk to talk about. I hope the tandem oled works out max because I've seen some pretty bad cases with our monitors. I'm not um I have a I have an OLED TV. I'm really happy with it. Okay. You also used the 13 W per meter Kelvin and it dropped like 15 degrees. Okay, that's good news. So um overkill labs which uh width do you use? It's not just weird screws. is just screws that have different lengths which are are potentially quite dangerous in terms of like having you know if you try to screw the wrong screw in at the wrong length then um you could you could poke a hole in your case which is something I have done before. So um we want to do like a basic benchmark and see what the performance is like. So this little handy app here is called um MX Power Gadget. And what it does is that it tells you the frequencies of the cores and also the temperatures too. So we're installing this game and it's like um throttling down from let's see five temp core temperature is 100. So, it's going maximum maximum speed. What other rubbish have we got installed on this? Let me kind of clear this up for mag more magn content is max steam or windows. Um, this one is steam. Okay, let me see if I can copy this game different. I don't necessarily need Do I have it on? because I have a a version here. Steam. So, this is using up. Oh, yeah. Just delete my steam bottle. Maybe just delete the entire steam bottle of um or hightail. Don't need that. You be quite um intelligent with uh with with space usage on Mac. Once bought a $50 cable from Amazon and was turned up because trash they showed up said I returned something else. Haven't got refund till date. Just complain. Just keep complaining Amazon until they refund you. See this side. This paral. Okay. So, clear up some space for more games. Stuff like this lying around. Okay. One thing you could do is just buy the keyboard again and then refund the original purchase, right? Using the keyboards and make sure that you return the correct one. Well, it's because the A I don't think the A18 Pro chip has a configuration for more RAM. We got to wait for A19 Pro to get released. I mean, to be honest, right, 12 GB is all you probably really need on the low-end Mac to do your basic stuff. It would open up a lot to be able to just have a bit more memory. games like um Crimson Desert will actually work. Yeah, 12 GB is just about minimum, right? Cuz like a lot of stuff would start working. Literally pretty much every single game would work better. 12:30. Yeah. 130. You can do it. Okay. So, what we're going to do, right, is we're going to do Let me just clear my space. So I notic is that um like disc right speeds up really slow on the MacBook Air. But even just stuff like this, like downloading from the internet, um patching games, right? It just seems like a lot slower than than in other, you know, other systems. To be honest, I probably could just delete Crimson Desert as well. Let's delete it. Actually, you know what? I'll I'll I'll maybe get benchmark to test the game on. Right now, the cores are running very hot. The melting benchmark. Yes. I have my next video idea, right, is to do like a MacBook Neo um gaming uh like tips, right? I'm just going to find my script. So um seven or eight tips, right? So tip. Okay. So my idea is like so this monitor application is called um MX power gadget, right? Okay. So um tips that I've I've got for I'm just so tip number one. Okay, so this is my idea for the MacBook Neo script. I'm kind of writing it in my head around. Number one gaming tip for MacBook Neo is that you have to find games which run under eight gigabytes of memory. Don't try to force games that require 16 GB because you're going to swap and the Mac swap is bad. Right? So it's the basic research the game before you do it before you try to run a game. Use 8 GB. Use games which run under 8 GB where possible. Okay. Number two, run the games without DRM. So for example, if you have Cyberpunk 2077, close Steam because that's going to use 1 GB of memory at least, right? Um, if you can get the game from somewhere like GG where they have run free installers or if you can run the app store version instead that's going to use less memory overall. Okay, that's two. Three, um, a aggressive background purge. So, make sure that you have no background applications running. So, if you have monitoring apps or like Creative Cloud or stuff like that, then just remove them where possible. Number four, we're going to do a thermal pad mod fix today just to to to check out the uh performance differences. Five, um resolution. Make sure you select the correct resolution because a lot of games like Runescape and stuff, they will just default at 4K, which is four times more than 1080p. Um I use an application called Switch OS X to select the correct resolution. Okay, number six. Um, a lot of games run a lot of Windows games can actually run through Crossover. So, Crossover will massively open up your gaming library on the MacBook Neo. Just make sure to select games which uh use less than 8 GB of total memory, including texture, video texture memory as well. Um, I guess eight is what? Seven is uh let me think of my notes out. Um, make sure to get use a controller and a mouse if you can because that's going to help a lot with games. Um, if you're using the MacBook near portably, I guess there's a lot of keyboard only games which which run well. And eight uh is let me see. Yeah, that was my last tip. So maybe that one should be a bit earlier. Yeah. So that that's my that's my idea for um what's this? Yeah. So I'm going to check out um we're going to benchmark so to speak um uh we're going to benchmark Crimson Crimson Desert and we're going to benchmark Cyberpunk, right? Um once I close this because this is like we're we're like peak core temperature at the moment. Our uh our CPU is capable of running at 5 GHz, but it's running at two. It's throttling down because it's we're running at 100° centigrade. That's why. Well, Apple announced something regarding gaming at WWDC. I do anticipate something like um that that that they'll get something up and running like game policy until 4.0 beta will probably get released that day. Maybe something amazing will happen. Maybe test running 2 will have no graphical issues and I don't know. I have no idea what's what's going to happen with Apple gaming in the future. It seems like two steps forward, two steps backwards in every scenario. You know, some games start working, we get native ports. I mean, we I would have thought that native ports of all of these games like the all the Resident Evil games and Death Running one, you would have thought that would translate into sequels too. So, Resident Evil 9 and Death Running 2. There's zero like announcement about that. I mean, maybe they'll do something at WWDC. Although, by the time, let's say that they release it, it'll be way too late. Like, I wonder if I can buy that. I think about M5 Pro. Maybe I get it before the holiday from the Apple store. Maybe I should buy this. Just buy this now cuz I wouldn't mind having it and then selling my old M3 Max a bit later. I'm already calling it my old M3 Max. Yeah. So, we have we always have two choices, right? Fewer or more CPU calls. It's like 200 difference. I think this will be technically a downgrade from my M3 Max. Wow, this this 14 this 14in config is already is like available to pick up from my local Apple store like straight away. Interesting. The issue is Mac owners who have who game have a console or PC for gaming and by the time the port comes out, they've already played it. Apple needs to fund day one ports. Yeah. Well, they need to fund day one ports and they also need to fund live service games because there's a ton of games are just the the games that people come back to the most are live service titles. The games which are have some kind of component which is live service. So it means constant updates and it's and and that that's the most costly thing to implement. It's a live service model, right? Games like Genjin Impact, Call of Duty, Fortnite, you know, all these like massive huge titles which have like thousands of people working on it. So you know, whatever Apple are doing on the gaming front, it's just not it's just not really enough. Do you reckon 36 GB of RAM is not enough for the next six? Yes, I think 24 is enough. Um, M3 Max versus M5. I'm AI mode. Blender renders the AI phone is faster for AI task faster. There only a handful of Exactly. Yeah. So there's not that many life service games to target. So like PUBG and uh Yeah. PUBG, Fortnite, Apex Legends. You know, how much RAM you need depends on what you use it for. 48 GB is my bare minimum. 64 GB is comfortable. I think you definitely be the exception. Okay, good. So, let's let's quit Steam, right? We'll try and run these games DRM free where possible. So I can I can go to library and I can go to uh crossover application support and then crossover bottles. One sec. Okay, that's a new one. Someone trying to sell me an olive tree on the street. So, you see here the um core temperature is going down. Temperatures are reducing. That's why I call it warm. Maybe I should get like a fan or something. Go a bit faster. cuz core temperature is dropping quite a lot. It should be going down quite a lot. I'll just get my um fan up. I can easily move air purifier. So this is like my idle temperature, right? You know, I should get my thermal Cyber Mac app kind of DRM free. Yes. I mean in the sense that it doesn't require an additional launcher in order for it to work. What's an E-cluster and a PC cluster? Eclusters, what does that mean? Efficiency call, right? What's an E call? efficiency and performance calls. Okay, so the P calls and the PC cluster. Okay, let's load up some platform. Okay, I think the key here is to run this in a window, right? So, we can actually see the stats properly. And the super even have higher gear hus than peles. Yeah. Okay. So, uh, let's load this up. Okay. So, we're in the menu now. We've got MX Power Gadget on this edge case here. And then what we'll do is we'll run the benchmark. now. I mean, it's already it's already gone really hot just from just from uh going through the menu. So yeah, so 3.5 to 3.7 watts. of usage is throttling down from 5 to six watts. Let's just do that again. Apple removes equals for M5 series. It's great news for M5 Ultra because it uses external power, not battery. So it utilize full SSC performance on max getting about 40 45 fps and there's 21 2160p output with affects the performance. So, I think this is even lower than before because it's it's throttles down. It's the pkg power, right? So, it should be uh the wattage of an A18 A18 Pro, it should be like six watts, right? draws maximum of 10 watts of power, but it's throttling down because it's going to 100 degrees like straight away. So on this benchmark, I know it's a weird resolution 1280 by 1024. Can I run it on a more standard resolution? Try a more standardized resolution. Run the benchmark here. So the graphics are low. Yeah, low graphics preset. I can supposedly used up to 78 watts. This is not really a good indicator. I'll leave this. I'll leave this. I I'll run it at I'll run at the same uh resolution later. Okay. So, let's just load up the Beast Crimson Desert. Oh, can I try Zen Zone Zero? Do you want me to try that on the NEO or do you want to try that on the M5 Max, which I'll do later? This is the way they intended you to play it, of course. and for it to take forever to load. Crimson Desert was throwing many stutters for me like every second Pro. Has that ever happened to you? So, uh so if we're looking at this, we're looking at like a frame rate would fluctuate a lot. It's about 66 frames per second. Let's throttle down to about 3.3 watts, right? So, it's on low settings at 720 by 480. Okay. Okay. So, that's that's my baseline information. Okay. Very good. So, we're going to shut this down, apply the mod, and then while we're waiting for that as well, I'll get my mic. What's the best method to run What's the best method to run Zen Zone Zero these days? Did he say crossover, right? Yeah, there's a cross type for it specifically. Okay, good. Okay. So, we're going to whip out the my over camera. My my over camera, which is hardly ever used. So um it's going to autofocus on our Yeah. So, it uses these tiny like pentalobe screws. So, we need the right bits for it. Focus. Focus. It's good. pentalobe bit. So, let me find mine. I think we need this one. Just check. Yeah, this is it. So, it's uh you need like a a one 1.2 pentalo bit which just fits this. Let me just go back through again because I might go a tutorial video about this. Yes. So, you need a pentalopee bit. Okay. And that's going to just fit there. Then we're going to use our bit to basically unscrew all of the screws. And you want to make sure that the Mac is completely turned off. And that we also have we also have different length of screws as well. I think this one's the long one. And then the front. I think we have different length here. Actually, these look the same. I just make sure to separate them out. Often the older MacBooks, the the uh the ones near the trackpad are shorter. Yeah, they are. So, the trackpad ones are a bit shorter with this um sleeve on it which has no grips. So these two near the trackpad need to be um correct place. Okay, we're downloading Xanone Zero. So that's going to take like 15 minutes. So hopefully by the time we do this, we're going to be done with the mod and done with testing as well. So, it looks like all the screws are the same except for the two near the um trackpad. Okay, that's good. We'll keep these nice and safe. Put them right there on my desk. And we're going to lift up the casing, which is not that easy. Oh, it slides, doesn't it? Yeah. So, kind of Let me put it this way again. Yeah. So, we want to take off the case by sliding it this way. Uh, so the tripod here and then slide it out. Yeah. So, there's like the a clips here which you have to slide out to get in. So, this is my first time doing this. Okay. Then we basically have the entire chip is here I think. And then this this whole part needs to be thermally padded. Okay. So we are using this pack of thermal pads. Right. And I'll leave a link to the description of a future video. But basically this comes in four different thicknesses. 0.5, one, 1.5, and two. Okay. So, we're going to use 1.5 today. Um because you can kind of test whether it needs to make good, really good contact, solid contact with the uh the bottom case. Okay. So, um let's see here. I think what we need to do is basically cover this entire piece. Opening the back does not void warranty. No. I think if we do here and then cut a piece for that, that'll probably be enough. So, I want to use a pair of scissors to cut this. So, you're marking it out roughly. Doesn't have to be exact, but like there. Just going to cut cut a piece like that. So, we're going to cover this piece. Actually, you know what? We're not going to cover the the um the cabling there. That should be okay. So, we're going to cover this section. And then we're going to use, you know what? We'll just cut another piece um to cover here. Maybe I use a Sharpie to get this correct or here. Um this So I just cut the shape. I mean these are doesn't have to be exact. And I think you probably could just cover the cables as well. I don't think there's anything necessarily bad about that. Something like that would give you a good surface area coverage for both chips. Okay. So, um basically build the adhesive. It's like adhered on both sides. I need to get my off the fingers. Okay. It doesn't really matter which side you and then do this side. This needs to go this way around. So, actually cut it the other way. go like this. And I'll take the um the back and I'll peel the plastic off here. Just remember to peel the plastic off both sides. Okay, good. So, this will stick to here like this. Then we're just going to slide the um this back on. So we need to put it kind of high above and then slide it in to the clips. Yeah. Nice and snug. Yeah. So it's nice and um connected up. And it should feel like a little tiny bit of uh tightness there. Where's my focus? Okay. So, let's put our trackpad screws back in first. So, we need to put our trackpad screws in first into the these two. I just got some manually focus. It just we have manual focus. Let me put our remaining squeeze back in. So, this mod, right, is like completely reversible and won't affect your warranty. Apple won't know whether you've done a thermal pad mod or not unless they look inside. So, before you, let's say that you had to return it for a repair or just do a return in general, you just take off that thermal pad and then they'll never really know like what you've done with it. Okay, Zelen Zone Zero is like 66% downloaded. So hopefully we'll be able to get this up and running soonish. Okay, so that is the um thermal pad mod. So let's get this back up and running and see how it goes. Okay, so we're going to run the same tests again and see how our Mac performs this time with the thermal tab mode. We're getting better frame rates, more consistent speeds, at least for a few minutes anyway for the the kind of thermal throttling uh catches up. Okay, so open up here. Then we get our game up, which is going to be in our library under Steam application support Steam. Um, you know what? I'll run this in light mode so that I can actually compare these contrast. So, it's able to hit higher power usage right now. And they should be able to draw more power and throttle less. 30% improvement is a pretty big number, but um it's it's very exaggerated when it comes to low um low low numbers, right? Because the difference between like 18 and 24 is a huge, right? But in in reality, it's not that much difference. Let's see how we get on with this. So, I'm running the same benchmark as before. Let me just review. What did we get before in the last test? Yeah. So, last time we got 32. Um, the average score was 32. 32 frames per second. I I feel like it's going way faster than before. So last test we averaged 32. Okay, I'm going to run it twice. 30 32 average. >> Okay, that's 32 going up to 40.58. What's the percentage? percentage increase. So 32 to 40 is uh 25% increase in performance. Okay, let's just run this again. So yeah, it's like completely different levels of performance with a really really basic um tiny modification to the uh to the Mac. non noninvasive, non-permanent, right? Definitely like something that you need to do on a on a MacBook Neo. That's pretty significant difference. Is able to draw more power with lower temperatures. Yes. Yeah. 40. This is consistently like much better, right? Okay, let's let's see if I can get Crimson Desert to run because basically the issue with this is that um B uh it will try to run in 4K. Okay, it's remembered my No, it's still trying to run in 4K. Yeah, even better with Frank J. It's not even that hot the keyboard. I'll take a I'll take a video of this um of the bottom case and see how hot it gets. So O for settings. Yeah, we're just doing some Mac. I just did a thermal mod um uh test. Okay. And I'm just going to test Crimson Desert on the same settings as before. So, I'm just going to find what graphic what um what resolution? 720x480. Okay. So, exactly the same settings, but 720x 480 instead in the window. Okay. 720 x 480. So, um, let's see how this runs. Yeah, thermal thermal mod. Thermal pad mod. 1.5 mm is the key. I think some people are doing it with a 1 mm thermal pad, and I think 1.5 mm is probably the way to go. B for Zelena Zone Z. Can you test this game with both D3D Metal and DXM? You got it. Right after this. Um, it's like 10 seconds away from finishing downloading. Yeah. So, we'll boot it up right after this. And then that will be my last chunk of this video for today. Just Okay. So, according to my last test, we were getting about, let me see, get about 66. We're looking at the the distant tower and then I was getting about 66 frames per second. Okay. So, we're looking in the distance at the tower. Oh, yeah. That's massive. Cuz um if I just take out my video from the last scene, I was looking at this exact view on the cliff. And I was only getting uh 66 and now it's like 90. So what's the difference between 66 to 90? Is Yeah, it is a 36% difference in speed. Yeah, exactly the same settings mostly because it's able to access higher power draw from the game. I can see it's going down a bit. So if I What are we doing? 85 instead. If it's only 85, it's hard to benchmark this game because So then it's only a 28% increase if it's 85. But if it's in that range, right, of like 8, if it's 86, when it's small numbers, right, it's um it's it's basically about 30% difference in performance just from like a tiny piece of thermal thermal pad. Do you have an M5 Pro that you've tested with? Just wondering between Pro and the Max. No, this is the MacBook Neo. So, um, apologies if you've come in for the stream and you're expecting M5 Max. I'm about to flip it over. Okay. So, um, I'm going to just, uh, flip this over to look at the bottom case. So, this is what the um it's like 44 degrees from the keyboard. But if I flip this over and look at the bottom case now. Okay. What am I seeing here? That is a warm lappy. Okay. It's 40 48 degrees at the bottom here. That's warm. Nice and warm. You know what? Let this run for a few more minutes and then I'll then I'll just try again. Such an easy model. Yet the difference is huge. Anyone with a Neo should do this or even a MacBook Air. Yeah, the MacBook Air makes a big difference. Um, let me see. The average temperature is 86°. So, it hasn't actually changed much. I guess it might change more once the um bottom case is like fully what do you call it saturated saturated with heat right then the effect of the thermal mod will decrease theoretically so it's that contact point between devices okay let me just try let me try Look again. How's this looking now? Still nice and toasty even after full load. But 40 47°. Okay, so that was after a few minutes. So, um if you as long as you don't mind your lap getting slightly warm, I don't think there's a problem with uh with doing this particular mod. Okay, cool. It's quite funny playing this. I didn't see any evidence of it actually. I think passively cooling this. The temperature is fine. It's not increasing. Not really. Okay. Anyway, it's the kind of laptop you're going to use for short bursts, right? Okay guys, final test of the day I think. Zero. We're going to run with DXMT and the 3D metal. This part must be part of the video. Okay. So, uh let me just get my let's calibrate plant goes here. Okay, good. So, um, right now we're running 3D D3D Metal. Let's just close everything in the background. Okay, we'll run a bit with uh, is restoative? Unfortunately, no, it ain't. does not like me launching the game through that. It's definitely an option to run it through the IPA. Uh let me try also isn't there another way of doing this which is called the doesn't y a support I'll just get this started in the background because um Let me see if we can get better lock through here. But um I'll just try running this through DXMT. Doesn't launch. What does launching? Y why AGL should have the option to do to to do D3D Metal and the guy who Three Shane the guy who developed this is also the main dev of DXMT. It's funny how a lot of tech, right? Like DXVK is just because some guy just really wanted to play NIA on on his on his Linux computer. So, he just developed this entire groundbreaking um technology just to get it to work. And it's similar with three chain, I think, is all these like gacha type games. So, this is a bit odd because this is a brand new. It's a brand new um bottle. I might try it through uh YHL instead because that it feels like it works better. I'll just install it again. Okay, just do it again. Yeah, guys addicted to gacha or I it's most what I found right is it's like mostly anime games, right? A lot of um I guess internet subcultures really like anime like a lot like anime type games a lot. Yeah, the guy the addicts like and and I think I I find it so interesting like a lot of people they when they're playing a game, right? Like they know it's a predatory gacha game, but they're looking for the next like addiction to go to get in. Yeah. They they're looking for an addiction. They want they're like they want to be able to have a you know a currency money based relationship with the game. They want that Yeah, I find I find I find the whole thing really interesting and bizarre. My favorite games are environmental puzzle games like Portal and anti-grav racing games like Wipe Out. Got lots of games where play cover probably run really well on Neo. Yes, you're probably right. No, I think as well is like a lot of source port games really well. Like I haven't looked at Mac source ports for a long time, right? But I I reckon almost all of these games work really well. Plants vs. Zombies one, stuff like Doom, Doom 3, right? I bet this works great on the Neo. And what other games are good? What other good Mac ports? Yeah. Fallout. Original Fallout. Original Quake. Original Diablo 1. Gothic stuff that is like you could you could kill hours with Transport Tycoon Deluxe. I think um all these all these types of games would uh these open source games open source implementations of certain games. The thing about um playing the PC version of of all these games is that they take up a load of space whereas the play cover version probably is a lot lighter in terms of um in terms of uh performance, right? test running one just about works on the MacBook Neo. So, I'm not sure that anything else is going to be good enough. So, we're still looking for max data catching up to this 580 Ti. Yeah. So, um Zenless Zone Zero PC, what is the Windows install size? We're looking at like 60 gigabytes. Whereas the Play Cover Zenless zone zero. I think it's just app size. So probably less than 10 gigs. I want to try the PC version because keyboard support. Yeah, full keyboard support, not mapping. I don't think there's I My feeling is that it's easier to maintain the Y AGL launcher than it is to run the sideloaded app because last time I checked, the sideloading apps was a bit of a shenanigans. Um, every time there's an update, you have to find the decrypted app. Whereas this one, it does have issues sometimes with launcher if they change the way that the compress file compressions are done. Oh yeah, Mac assistant. That's true. That is um it gets constantly updated. I get loads of stuff about this. Yeah, this is true.
