Well, let's get right into the questions because as always, we have a lot to get to. The first one here from Kain Subtle says, "Personally, I would rather trade for a sock paradus instead of signing a platoon type bat or a GO. Get the best talent and figure it out. What say you?" Uh Kane, I I agree 100%. And that was my point from the very beginning of this off seasonason. Now, I kind of backed off of it a little bit once I saw the direction that AA was going and just building out more depth. But my point from the very start of the offseason was go get an impact bat. Go Cody Bellinger was a name that I talked about a lot. And when I said that, I had so many people questioning me, well, what are you going to do? Where are you going to put them? You figure that stuff out. And more often than not, that's going to work itself out. But go get the talent. go get the bat and you let everything else kind of take care of itself. So, look, I'm not I'm not gonna sit here and say that Paradis is that guy. But to for your overall point, I definitely agree with you 100%. You go get the talent and you you figure out the rest of it later. So, that part of it I definitely agree with. Next question from Cass Buckeye says, "The Astros need to get off Paradus and the Braves need a jolt. Why hasn't a trade happened yesterday? Especially given the familiarity between the front offices. Sure, a Ryan Mount Castle would be fine, but I really think this team needs a big spark. So, one of two reasons ultimately when you break it down why it hasn't happened yet. One, either AA just isn't all that interested, which is the most likely scenario here, or two, the two teams just don't line up, which is also very much a possibility. I don't know exactly what the Astros are asking for or looking for. or you know, both teams are trying to contend right now, so that can make it a little bit difficult to try to work out a trade. Just looking at the Astros roster really quickly, looks like maybe they could use some help in the outfield. Braves don't really have any outfielders to give right now that I think would interest them. Astros also look like they could use some help in the bullpen, especially without Josh her possibly to begin the season. Braves can't really afford to give up any any bullpen options unless they want an Aaron Bummer. Not that the Rays really need to save the money now at this point with the the extra 15 million that they got. So, it makes it a little bit difficult just because both teams are trying to contend and I'm sure the Astros are going to want something back that's going to help them win this year and the Braves can't really afford to give any of those players up. Another question from Cass Buckeyes. Is it possible that the team has known about the ProFar suspension for a while only made one of the signings they did because they knew the money was coming off the books and that the budget is even less than we thought? I think that's highly unlikely to assume that that was the case that the team knew about this and so they were they were already planning on that and they're planning on you know keeping the budget lower than we thought. I would be shocked if that was the actual case. One that they knew about this a while ago and two that they actually would try to keep the budget low. [laughter] I know some of you would probably think that's actually what the team is doing. I I don't think so. I think we always knew that we or we've seen them push to that that third luxury tax threshold before. It seemed like that was the direction that they were heading in again. So, no, I don't think that was the case here with the the Jerick Proar situation that they knew about it, you know, and wanting were wanting to keep the payroll low. Uh Dustin Mounts says, "Do you think the Hassan Kim timeline affects whether the Braves pick up an outfielder with Dubon able to be the platoon partner with Ystrinsky if Hassan Kim comes back sooner rather than later? and if so would allow bigger trade targets at the deadline. Um, sorry, I was watching the Venezuela Netherlands game and Ronald just hit a rocket, but it was a line out. And if so, would would allow for a bigger trade targets at the deadline like a Bucks and others if available. I think it probably keeps Alexopoulos from making a smaller type move. The fact that Hassan Kim and Shawn Murphy could be back in the beginning of May, I think it keeps AA from making a smaller type move. I still think if there's a chance to get a Paradus, a Yandi, or a Mount Castle that you go and do it. Those are potentially impact bats that you could use all season, but I could I can understand not going out and getting an Andrew McCutchen, although I wouldn't have minded that either, especially on a minor league deal or a Tommy Fam or somebody like that and just riding it out with what you have in an Eli White, a Ben Gaml, a Dominic Smith and Farmer as well until Murphy and Hassan Kim return. But to your point, the the timeline, if the time line were more like late June, like we all initially thought when we heard the news, I think it does put a little bit more pressure on AA to go make something happen now. But the fact that you could be getting two impact bats back, you know, pretty soon within the first couple of months of the season, it probably doesn't make it as imperative for Alexis to go out and and make a move, even though I think he should. you know, I I want him to, as I said, I want him to go upgrade the team, you know, right now from the jump, not wait, because you don't know what's going to happen between now and the middle of May. You could lose somebody else and at that point it might be even harder to go get a deal done and it might cost you even more. So, if you can upgrade the team now, you do it now in my opinion. But, I can understand that that line of thinking and reasoning for Alex Anthopoulos is that, hey, we might get two bats back here within the first couple of months of the season. Let's no let's not go out and blow the budget right now and give up a lot of trade assets when this might not be as big of an issue in a month and a half. Next question comes in from bad news barbs who says do you think AA will add via trade since the proofar news. I know it takes two to trade but they basically found 18 million in the couch cushions with the suspension. Also if they can't find a bat shouldn't they add to the rotation and strengthen some part of the team? Again, if it's me, yes, I am doing something, but I am not the GM of the Atlanta Braves. And the way I'm feeling as a fan of the Braves, I'm not feeling optimistic that he's going to do anything at this point. The sentiment with the starters feels the same as it does with the with the ProAr potential ProAr replacement. If they're not all-star caliber, it's not worth adding. I would not be surprised if he is carrying that same mindset into this situation too. You know, the mindset for him all offseason for getting a starting pitcher is it has to be a a playoff caliber starter. Has to be an all-star level type of starter essentially. And I would imagine he's probably feeling that same way about a potential profile replacement for the reasons that I just talked about on the last question is that you might have a couple of bats back in the first month and a half and this might not be that big of an issue. I'm not saying I agree with that. It just it feels like that's what's happening here. It feels like he's just going to go into the season with what they have, see how it works out, and then potentially add from there. I hope he proves me wrong and I hope he go he does go out and and make some sort of move whether for a uh a bat or or a starter. But that's just the way I I'm feeling and reading the situation right now from how the offseason has played out is that he's done making his depth moves. The only other moves he's going to make is if it's a an impact bat or an impact starter, which is great, which is great, but you have to be willing to pay the price for that, too. And he's so far been unwilling to pay the price for that. All right, we got a lot more questions to get to uh on today's episode of Locked On Braves, including more about the Jerick Proar situation and possible replacements for him. We'll get into the rest of those questions here next. Getting back into our list of questions here. Uh the next one coming from of Wolf and Man who says, "With the money the Braves are saving from Profar substension, why doesn't AA sign Gilito or Latell? I would sign both to play it safe. Um, this is a part of the answer that I gave on the last question before the break, but he just seems dead set on signing someone who is an all-star, especially for the rotation. Again, I'm not saying I agree with that, but that that is his stance that he is taking that he's not going to sign any starting pitcher that is not that he does not see starting in a postseason game. For me, Chris Basset fit that mold. Again, not to to beat another dead horse there. Lucas, Golito, Zack Latell probably don't. And so that's why they haven't started. You might get similar production out of Bryce Elder, Joey Wentz, Jar Richie. Not saying you will, but you might. And you already have those guys and they're probably I don't know what the price is on as a Gelledo or Latell at this point, but might be cheaper than what you would have to give those guys. Next question from Voltron 66 says, "I personally like Dom Smith here as a DH candidate. Don't know much about him, but I was wondering if he's just best off as a strong side platoon since he bats from the left side. What do you think? I mean, it's a career 731 OPS versus right-handed pitchers. Um, you know, that's not that's not great. Not terrible. He was 779 last year though against righties. I think he could be fine, but I'm not in love with it just because again, it's not I would if you're going to be just a strictly strongside platoon player like that, I would love to see your career ops against right-handed pitchers in this case, well above 750, if not close to to 800. And it's at 731 for his career. Again, better last year, seven almost 780 last year. would certainly take that, but he also can really only play first base. He's played outfield in the past. I don't think you're going to be doing that. So, it's it's a DH only that has to crush right-handed pitching. He doesn't have any speed either. So, this is a situation where if Donald's going to be on your roster, he's going to be your DH. He has to crush right-handed pitching. Uh, and I think that just really limits the potential of what he could bring. Azul says, "What happens if Proar wins his appeal? Do the Braves roll with him or trade him? That um it seems so unlikely that I don't even really want to to speculate on what that could potentially look like and how awkward that would be. He would have to do the greatest salesman job in the world to win back over his teammates again. You know, after after what he did last season, then you come back and you do it again. Now, you know, you're also, it depends, I guess, on how the appeals process plays out. Like, was there some sort of tampering situation? Like, why did they overturn it? Was it a potentially, you know, false negative? Like, a lot of it could depend on on the situation and how it gets overturned. But again, I think it's I think it's highly unlikely that that happens, but it could create a very awkward situation in the clubhouse. Uh, a 1018 says, "Do you blame AA for the signing of ProFar and what do you see the Braves doing with that 15 million?" I don't think you can blame Alex Anopoulos for the signing. Um, perhaps you should have done a little bit more digging after seeing a guy break out as a 31y old and maybe he did. We don't know. You know, you have Mark Bowman reporting from some Padres's sources that they were a little suspicious after that that 2024 season. And then you know when they don't really pursue him all that all that hard of course they had a lot going on that offseason the Padres's um you know ownership group did but you know they didn't really pursue Jerick Proofar that that hard after you know what he did for them and after he became a fan favorite. Padre's fans at least were were very upset with Proofar not coming back. But maybe that should have been a little bit of a sign for you to maybe look a little bit deeper into it. I still don't think you can put a ton of blame on him for it as far as the what they can do with the 15 million for this year. Go out and get an impact bat or go out and get an impact starter. Like you now have 15 million more dollars that you can spend on top of the already what I thought was another 15 million or so. So you potentially have another 30 million that you could spend right now going up to that third luxury tax threshold. Go get an impact player. You've been saying I'm only going to make a movements of an impact pay player. Well, you got the money to go do it now. Uh, so go make it happen. But again, I'm not feeling very confident that's going to be the case. Hostile General says, "Given the news with Proofar and trying to keep from overstating his production and importance to the lineup, how much do you realistically think Ystrimsky can give us? I'm fine with Eli's production as a platoon. Honestly, if Ystrimsky does a little better than that, it should work." I'm very bullish on Yastrimsky this season. And I said that I got off to the hot start in spring training. And here's why. He was an average offensive player in San Francisco, a ballpark that ranks 27th out of 28th major league ballparks for left-handed hitters. And that's because you didn't have two major league ballparks last year is why it's 28. He went to Kansas City at the trade deadline deadline last year, which ranks 11th in all of baseball for left-handed hitters. And he put up a 263 ISO. 160 is about league average for isolated power. He put up a 263 and a 127 WRC plus. 100 is league average. So, he was well over league average at 127. And he did that in the final 50 games at Kaufman Stadium, which is a much better park for left left-handed hitters. Now, he comes to Atlanta, which has the same ballpark factor as Kansas City for left-handed hitters at 100, but the Braves are a much better ballpark for home runs for left-handed hitters. So, I think Yrim is going to have a really good year. I mean 20 25 home runs I think is very attainable for Yrimsky. The average is always going to be a bit of a question mark for him but I think I think definitely the power potential is going to be there for Yrimsky to have a big year. So that's why I'm not too worried about the Shrimsky side of things. But even before the Proar news, I still thought this team needed another right-handed bat. I think they definitely now need a right-handed bat. And all the stuff I'm talking about, you do need to isolate him to right-handed pitching. It is it is a rough go against lefties, but if you do that, I think your stretchy is definitely going to outpace what the production that Provar would have given you as a left fielder, but you're still missing that production potentially in the DH spot. Next question comes from Daryl, who says, "Can we get longer mailbag episodes?" Well, Daryl, thank you for asking that. uh you know, you will be getting longer mailback episodes, although they have been longer in the past. But what I've done the last two weeks is I've split it out into multiple episodes because I have so many questions. And so, in order for me to not have to speed through some of your questions, I've been splitting it up into two episodes. And quite frankly, you've been killing it on the second one that I've uploaded. The past two weeks, I've uploaded a a Friday night episode, an addition to the Mailbag podcast, and I'll be doing it again this week. a lot a lot of questions to get to and so I'll have another mailback episode late on Friday night headlined by a good question on Spencer Strider and why that IBB is so important to him. I'll explain what IBB is as well. Uh so look out for that episode coming out on Friday night. Jared Morris says u question for the Friday mailbag. What is your take on how how Michael Harris has looked early in spring? He's got three walks and seems to be making a lot better swing decisions thus far. Just want your two cents. Love the show and I watch you every day. Well, thank you so much uh for that, Jared. But unfortunately, it's just spring training, but I mean certainly the three walks is encouraging. He had three walks over a three-month span last year. So, the three walks in spring training is definitely encouraging. And the bats I've I've watched, I've seen some good things. I've seen some bad things for Michael Harris, too. So, I think we definitely need more data on him. But that's also going to follow into the next question, too, that comes from uh Wriggler, who says, "In an interview this week, Chipper said, "Some hitters don't listen until they hit rock bottom. The contact the context was being asked about Michael Harris finally listening to Chipper's advice a year after he gave it. Do you think Michael Harris's ego is what has held him back from improving and finishing his development as a player?" Full disclosure, I haven't heard that that interview and that quote from Chipper Jones, so I I can't uh verify the validity of it. Not that I don't trust Wriggler here, but I just haven't seen that myself. What I will say though is yes, there is definitely the possibility that Michael Harris's pride has gotten in the way. And and I don't mean that as a a slight against Michael Harris, but when you consider that this kid shot through the minor league system. He came in to Major League Baseball as a youngster, 21 years old, won rookie of the year, came back the next year, followed it up with another really good season. Why would you why would you change something that's worked so well for you and that has brought you so much success? Why would you immediately just change that after all the success that you've had? So again, I don't say this to slight Michael just to paint the picture that he had no reason to ever doubt what he was doing before that. But as Chipper is is big on saying, you have to continually adjust in this game. And it's not just Chipper that says that. You know, any great player, Hall of Famer will will tell you that. And I think Michael is finally to that point where he's he's understanding and learning that. and hopefully going to make those adjustments. Again, I I think the world of Michael Harris, I think the I said it on a podcast earlier this week, I think he has 3030 potential. I've always thought that for Michael, but it is going to take some adjusting from him. And again, there just wasn't really I I you make the comparison to Spencer Strider, who came in second in that inner rookie of the year, too. I've heard Cider Strider talk about in an interview one time when people were asking him, "Do you need to add another pitch? Can you continue to be a two- pitch pitcher?" and Strider said something too effective. Why would I change anything if what I'm doing is working? And and so I think you can take that same mentality for Michael Harris. Why would he ever change anything? He came up to the major leagues in his first two years and was just a a great player, but now he's seeing these past two years, he's going to have to adjust if he wants to continue to be that great player. Another question from Calvin Finner who says, "Is there any prospect you've seen this far in spring that has made you more excited for them? Anyone you'd be less inclined to trade after seeing?" Um, there isn't a prospect who has disappointed so far in spring training, but there also isn't a prospect that I've seen that I thought you can't trade this guy. Like even in John Hill, who's had a couple of home runs, there's still there isn't anybody that's just completely wowed me in spring training. I also think we've gotten a ton of looks at these guys. J.R. Richie looked good. Owen Murphy, Garrett Baloo, but I but I was already high on those a lot of those guys coming in and they haven't done anything to really change my view or opinion of them. So, yeah, one way or the other, I don't think anything that I've seen from the prospects has really changed my mind. And then another one on prospects. Daryl says, "With all the pitching talk in the minors, who would be the first hitter we would we could see this year? Hill, Miller, Lois?" None of them. Uh I'm not sure we see any top prospects get at bath for the Braves this season. If we do, it means something's gone completely wrong. So, I I would be highly surprised if we see any of those guys at the major league level this season. All right, guys. Several more questions to get to on today's episode before we wrap it up. And then don't forget, if you don't hear your question on this episode, it'll be on the Friday night version of the Mailbag Podcast. But I will get to a couple more questions here next. This week's MLB Top 100 highlight is brought to you by MLB The Show 26. the latest from the beloved video game franchise. Each week, we're highlighting the stars of MLB's top 100 player list. The elite names you'll be controlling, building around, and going head-to-head with in MLB this show. And today, we're spotlighting none other than Ronald Akuna Jr., ranked number 14 in the MLB's top 100. And he'll also be starting out as a diamond card with a rating of 87 in MLB The Show's Diamond Dynasty. That needs to go up. You've already seen him go off in the World Baseball Classic. Uh, you've seen it all with Ronald as a Braves fan. He's got the power, he's got the speed, he's got the arm. That same dominance shows up in MLB The Show 26 with upgraded ratings, new animations, and improved gameplay feel. If you're a Braves fan, this is the guy you build your franchise around. And in the show, you can do exactly that. That's what I'm doing first night. I'm doing whatever I can to get that Ronakuna Jr. card and putting him in my Diamond Dynasty lineup. And World Baseball Classic is back in in MLB The Show 26. And Ronald's part of that as well with team Venezuela. You got a double to start off team Venezuela's games. You're going to want to check out that card as well. It'll be the show 26. Let you be the guys the way we talk about them every day. Their clutch moments, breakout seasons, and new superstar traits. All right. Again, thank you as always for jumping in here and giving all these great questions. Like I said, if you don't hear your question on this episode, I will get to it into tonight's podcast that we'll talk about. Uh, but the next one I do have here for you comes from Kathy G, who says, "If you were a Braves beat rider and weren't afraid to lose your job, what are the first three qu questions you would ask?" Aa, same for Walt Weiss. Thanks as always. So, um, these are the three questions that I came up with. The first one I would ask Alex Anthopoulos is why did you not just give Freddy Freeb a sixth year? And then always have to disclaimer here. This is nothing to do with Matt Olsen. Love Matt Olsen and he's been great. But why didn't you not just give Freddy Freeman a sixth year? That that would be my first question to Alex and my second question to Alex and would be, why are you so afraid to make a big move for a free agent? We never see the Braves in on any top free agents. Why are you so scared? That'd be my second question. And then my first question to Walt Weiss would be, how many times did you have to wake up Snicker in the dugout last season? I don't think I would get that that question out of my mouth before I got kicked out. But uh those would be my three questions there. Uh, the next one from Calvin Fenner says, "While he tries to downplay it, there seems to be a correlation with Chipper's involvement in the team having better at bats. How much influence do you think he really has?" To me, I think he was the X-Factor missing the last two seasons. That feels like a stretch to me and like we're putting way too much emphasis on the impact that Chipper has. Not saying that he h he doesn't have some impact. We've heard many players talk about, you know, Chipper helping them and and seeing them have some success after that. But that that's way too much emphasis there on on how much impact Chipper actually has. He certainly has some influence and I'm sure or I know that he's helped a few guys get going and CJ talked about CJ McCowsy talked about this on the podcast both times he's been on the podcast with me. Most of these guys have their own hitting coaches. Um Tim Hires, Chipper Jones, the hitting coaches that the Braves have and Chipper said this on an interview in the the game the other day. you know, their job is to, you know, look at some things mechanically, give them some ideas and some thoughts, but ultimately it's on the players, but coaches certainly can see those things like we've already talked about this this spring training with Tim Hires, noticing that hip slide for Austin Riley and pointing it out. You know, those are little things that coaches can check can can catch and relay that information to hitters and hopefully that they can make that adjustment and get going. So, I don't want to deemphasize the impact that coaches have. I also really don't want to overemphasize the impact and and it feels Calvin to me like you're definitely overemphasizing the value that Chipper brings as a a hitting coach. Another one from Calvin here who says, "Hearing the top prospect list with yourself and Gorov makes me wonder why keep Elder Wentz and Suarez. Sounds like Richie Sennard and Moore are just as promising if not better and have options plus would clear the log jam we have." It's just simply for depth. I mean, I think you have to at least see what you have in an Elder and Wentz and Suarez to begin with. And those guys like especially, you know, Balman and and Sinard, those guys need some more seasoning. I think Richie is the the only one of those prospects right now that I would feel all that comfortable putting in the rotation at the moment. I think the rest of those guys could definitely still use some seasoning. But while you have an elder and a win and a Suarez under you your control, you might as well keep that depth because you're not certain what you're going to get in those prospects. And then last question for today's episode and then like I said, I'll answer the rest on the one coming up on Friday night. Zack Blackerbee's burner says, "Honest thoughts on how Auburn is doing so far behind conference plays before conference play starts and what can we uh just e can we dump profile salary or trade or release them and save money?" I hope Zack Blacker is a better uh writer than you are. But either way, Auburn's offense finally got going. A little scared after that first weekend. They got Chris Rimbert back earlier than I expected. So, that's all good. My Italian cousin Jake uh Mariano has been brilliant. So, I'm feeling a little bit better about the Auburn Tigers. As far as the profile situation, unless something changes in the CBA, which it should, there needs to be some sort of language in a contract that says if you get popped for suspension, the team has the opportunity and the right to renegotiate that deal, if not just altogether drop it. But as of now, there is nothing like that in the CBA. So, the Braves are on the hook for that 15 million in 2027. Only thing they can hope for is that Proofar gets popped again for peeds or he just happens to retire. Otherwise, they're going to have to give them that $15 million in 2027 or just completely cut them and have to eat that 15 million, which don't think they're going to do. All right, that's all the questions for this mailbag episode, but we will have another one on Friday night. So, make sure that you come back for that episode. Got a good topic on Spencer Strider and that induced vertical break, why it matters, and why Strider needs it. We'll get into all that on Friday night's episode and many other questions as well that I didn't get to in this one. But again, that would do it for this episode of a locked on brave. Atlanta Braves suddenly gain $15 million in payroll flexibility after the Jurickson Profar suspension—will Alex Anthopoulos use this windfall for an impact move or wait as the season unfolds? Jake Mastroianni tackles hot mailbag questions, examining rumors of trades for Isaac Paredes, Ryan Mountcastle, and potential signings like Lucas Giolito and Zach Littell. Fans wonder if the Braves should bolster their rotation or strengthen the lineup, especially with Ha-Seong Kim and Sean Murphy possibly returning soon. Key topics include how Mike Yastrzemski’s left-handed power can offset Profar’s absence, Michael Harris II’s spring progress and evolving approach, and whether Chipper Jones’s coaching has influenced Atlanta’s recent at-bat quality. Insightful takes on the club’s depth strategy, prospects’ status, and payroll strategy round out the discussion. Can the Braves leverage their unexpected budget for a playoff-caliber addition, or will they trust their current depth until trade deadline fireworks?
