Don and I at DND Sports Cards have been selling on whatnot for 30 days. Our first 30 days is wrapped up in January. We did a couple of shows a week through the entire month of January. This is the conclusion that we've come to. Number one is the platform shipping profile, whatever you want to call it, is a mess. It's counterintuitive to buyers and to sellers and it needs to be revamped. Num, we figured it out, but it took forever. It was not counterintuitive at all. Number two is the amount of freebie seekers that are on that platform is mindblowing. There's people that will come into every stream. They they enter the stream and then they start typing on the computer, "When's your next freebie? When's your next freebie? when's your next freebie? And half the time the the the freebiey's running when they're typing, it's it's like parrots. It's like, when's your next freebie? When's your next freebie? When's your next freebie? It's maddening if you let it be. And then the third thing, and this is the thing I have got to get better at. I've got to wrap my mind around and I've got to come up with a solution. And it's a ma show preparation is a major major time suck for us. Now, I realize there's a lot of people that just kind of go and they look through their box. You guys interested in that? You guys interested in that? That's not the way we run a show. We normally do 150 items at a time. They're all preloaded. Every single card that we're going to be running, it's primarily singles are all preloaded in the system. So, people can look down and okay, they're at 40 at 47. They've got this Otani that's going to be sold. People can look, they can come in, they can do pre-bids if they want. And I just think it's a much better show for the people that attend. And that's the only way I feel comfortable doing it. But I've got to get better at I've got to figure out better solutions because it is a major time suck. And it's taken away from other aspects of our business. With all that said, the freebie seekers, the shipping chaos, the the time suck, we are going to continue to do whatnot throughout this year. And there's three or four reasons why. I'm going to share those with you on this video. If you are a side gig card dealer, you're looking to create a second income, you're not using whatnot, I hope you'll find this information beneficial. And uh let's get into it. >> From a business perspective, I think the first thing is we have to really understand what's happening on whatnot. Um this is just a statement that I pulled off of a website. Selling sports cards on whatnot has rapidly become one of the most dynamic and fast growing avenues in the collectibles market. Blending live stream social commerce with traditional card trading. In 2025, what not whatnot more than doubled its overall sales to $8 billion in sports card trading games and and trading games with the top selling categories in the United States with roughly $6.4 million sports cards purchased per month. And get this, more than two sports cards sold every second globally. This explosive engagement reflects not just high volume but also active seller participation. One in eight sellers now they're now run their business fulltime on the platform. That that blows my mind. And successful live streamers can generate millions in annual sales particularly through the card breaks and auction style streams that draw thousands of viewers at once. What nots model where sellers interact live with buyers creates a strong community and entertainment factor that is attracting both hobbyists and professional sellers, contributing significantly to the platform's valuation and continue expansion in the sports card segment. Guys, live selling is the future. Just do any kind of research you want on live selling on the internet, not just the United States, all over the world. Live selling is the future. And I get it. I promise you. I get it. When I first went on whatnot, the first four or five times, I just I couldn't navigate. I couldn't figure out what was going on, what I was looking at. A lot of yelling and screaming and people yelling at the chat to wake up and this is not a $50 card. You guys can't kill me like that. And on and on and on. It was a lot of people in my mind that were needy trying to convince people to place bids and greedy. Needy and greedy is what I saw. And I didn't want any part of it. And I kept hearing about it and I knew live selling was it and I kept coming back to it. And finally I broke through and got the vision for what the possibilities were. And when that happened, I did this video. It's on this channel. And if you're kind of where I am with or was with this where this is ridiculous, I'm not wasting my time here, I get it. I understand. But I would recommend that you check out this video. And if you have trouble like I did navigating, I did a video here that just gives you basic navigation on whatnot. Uh I wish I'd started a lot earlier. And I have no doubt that there's going to be some people that, you know, a year, two, three years from now who wish that they had started earlier. Now, the reason that we decided to to make this move was real simple. I know that there are collectors out there looking for familyfriendly shows with authenticity, true comps when comps are even mentioned, a really good pace show and those that are fans of the sports and the cards that they're making available on the whatnot platform. I mean, I saw people and they said, "I don't know anything about these cards, but I b I bought this shoe box at the at a garage sale, so I'm going to" and they were selling them like that. People don't like that. The most important thing for me was I knew that there I felt like there was a market for a family, what I call familyfriendly show. people don't have to worry about cussing and fussing and crazy music and that they can just go collectors can go on and see a good selection of cards that they would like to add to their collection. So again, we officially started 30 days ago or in January and our first month month we ended up with 1,117 followers. I don't know if that's good or bad. I have no idea. But I think if I can maintain a pace of just adding 500 new followers every single month that by the end of one year, I believe that in 12 months we can reach a our goal, which is to have 50 to 100 loyal collectors that view our shows every week. And at that point, we'll be able to earn a consistent profit if we continue to buy, right? And that's the key to the whole thing. Don and I have to go into the marketplace, buy collections, uh go through the value bins. We have to go out there and do the work. And if we can find awesome deals, then we can in turn around and offer great value to our customers and and that gives us a chance to earn their long-term business. And that's the whole philosophy in which we started this and and and which we will continue. because there's not a lot of people on whatnot that are advertising familyfriendly show and if you would like to jump on whatnot like I had a gentleman I talked to last week and he said I love your show love your what you do love the cards you provide he said 8:15 in the evening is perfect time for me because usually I'm getting the kids bathed and to bed and I can turn turn the show on and listen and participate and I don't have to worry about what the kids hearing vulgar music or what have you or people yelling cussing and fussing says I appreciate your show because of that and I know there's a lot more people out there that I believe will as well like I would. So, you know, that's kind of where we're at with it. So, that's really why we we feel like we need to continue. We're losing money. We're not making it, you know, it's not it's it's, you know, it's it's a grind and it's going to be a grind and we understand that. But we do have a long-term vision for what this can become, what we believe it can become. So, this this warms my heart honestly. Uh, in our shows, we give away three buyers giveaway during each stream. We usually do one around the 50 auction mark, the hundred and towards the end. And we normally will give away slabs to people that have bought anything during the stream. And one night um we were doing our our uh giveaway. We were g gave away a slab. I think it might have been this Ellie right here. I don't really remember. But anyway, uh the lady that won it said, "We are so excited. My son and I are here watching your show. We just won this lab and we are so excited. And they've come back and and are are active participate participants in our show. And that to me is what this is all about. That's what this hobby is all about. This little fella here, you know, collecting cards and and learning. And it's just so good for kids. And when we Don and I go to shows and we set up and we see families or we see fathers and daughters and mothers and sons come through the show, it means a lot to us. I I have major flashbacks to when I was a kid. We didn't have card shows when I was a kid, but what cards taught me about communication and it taught me so much in my early years and I love to see kids involved and you don't see a lot of that on whatnot and you don't see a lot of shows designed for families. So, we wanted to do a family show. So, I'm going to give you five tips if you want to start selling on whatnot. These will help you. I promise this is something you may want to take some notes on because if you will follow these five five tips, it'll put you way ahead of the game. First of all, spend a few hours watching as many whatnot shows as you possibly can from those that are doing business the way you can do it and and the way you want to do it. In other words, like all we sell is singles. We're not doing breaks and we're not we're not doing any form of gambling. We're not doing value packs and all that stuff. We sell singles and people know what they're buying and we pre-list everything and we're not doing, you know, 15second sudden deaths, you know, on a $30 card and calling it a $100 card. And we don't we aren't doing all that junk that you we all see on whatnot. We're selling singles. We're we're pre-listing everything so people know what's coming next and they know uh they can do comps if they want. They can do pre- bids if they can't stay. And it's just in our mind it's the best way to do it. But if you're going to look at whatnot shows, look at people like don't go and watch big breakers necessarily or hard shops. If you don't own a card shop, find people that would run a show that are running shows like you would run if you decide to do this. And if you have people on YouTube and you like their channel and they talk about their own whatnot, do a search on whatnot and follow them and follow their shows and check them out. They probably have a link in their description of their video to their whatnot page. Uh this is ours, just for the record. And and I'm sure you if you haven't gotten your $15 free credit and so on so forth, you can get that if by using that link and you've probably already heard that, you've probably done that. I got my $15 credit a year before I ever bought anything on whatnot because again, I just couldn't stand it. The navigation was just it was just ridiculous in my mind. So that's the first tip. spend some time with YouTubers that on their whatnot channel. Second thing, uh, go to YouTube and follow this watch. I watched every one of these, but I didn't find this channel until after we had already done several shows. I would give anything if I found this channel before we started. I didn't, but this guy does a great job. He does interviews with some of the top whatnot sellers. Many have been doing it several years. Um, it's a good channel. He does interviews and he does a good job with it. Uh, follow Joel ATX and I think you'll get value from his interviews. Number three, begin with the end in mind. I cannot stress this highly enough. Begin with the end in mind. What are you where are you ultimately going? What do you ultimately want to do with what not? As I've already mentioned, our goal was in 12 months, if we can develop a loyal following where we have 50 to 100 loyal viewers, customers on each show, then we'll be able to earn a consistent profit if we continue to buy, right? And so it's we had a long-term vision, especially after 90 days. I when we started I said I'm going to go 90 days no matter what happens I'm going to go I'm not I'm not not going to stop I'll stop and re-evaluate at the end of 90 days. So we're at the end of basically our 30-day mark. I may do another video at the two-month mark and maybe another one at the three-month mark. I don't know. But I've learned a lot and and I hope you you're getting some value here. I would make a 90-day schedule and commit to it before you start. And we we're on whatnot every Tuesday. Tuesday is our whatnot day. 12:15 8:15 8:15 in the evening around noon at 12:15. Every Tuesday we're there. We show up and and you know, we've only been doing it a month, but now we've got 5, 10, 15 people that we're seeing regularly now. And that's awesome. And that tells me if we can continue to do what we're doing, we'll we'll we'll get to where we need to go. The first 90 days is not about making profit. It's about establishing an audience. In my mind, I know there's people that pop on whatnot every now and then and they're just there to sell a few cards and make profit. I realize that and there's a place for that. But if you are looking to develop a consistent side gig, predictable long-term business in this niche, full-time or part-time, then consistency and doing things to build a real business. See, yet there's two mindsets. You can go on whatn not to make money or you can go on whatn not to build a business. two totally different mindsets. Are you there to build a business? Are you there to make money? Because if you build the business and you build it correctly, then you can you you can make money over a long haul. Successful people are willing to do what most people aren't so they can do for the rest of their business career what most people can't. If you're just jumping on and selling cards whenever and that's all you ever do, then five years from now you'll be jumping on and selling cards whenever. And and again, there's a place for that. And if that's what you want to do, I'm not saying you shouldn't, but I'm saying a lot of people are jumping on and selling cards whenever, and they think they're building a whatnot customer base and following and business, and they're really just selling cards. Something to think about. Number four, identify your market before you start and understand it can revolve over time. The what we're doing now, we will not be doing a year from now. I can almost guarantee it. Not we'll be doing a lot of what we're doing, but a lot of the inventory and cards that we bring to the market a year from now will be different than what we're doing right now. Because I tell you, there's so many people they go on and from the beginning there, I can't tell you how many $100 cards I've seen go for 20, $30 or less on whatnot. And that's a good way to burn yourself out on this market very quickly. So, you got to be real real strategic in in what you're doing and the cards that you're selling. The number one rule, and I've heard this over and over and over because before I found the uh the YouTube interviewer the that I shared with you a few minutes ago, I was just going and listening to anything I could find on whatnot. I went through everything on YouTube and there's probably the amount of content on whatnot has probably doubled literally in the last 60 days. People talking about selling sports cards on whatnot. It's it's probably the content the amount of people creating content about this subject has probably doubled. And then when I found that guy uh the thing that you'll hear people over and over and over and over, this is the number one rule and that's be consistent. Be consistent. And that's why we have our specific day. And I didn't want to commit to that. I I just didn't because you know what if I'm a huge University of Kentucky basketball fan and what if the Wildcats are playing Tennessee and it's Tuesday and I'm supposed to be doing whatn not and the Wildcats are playing. So, hey Dale, sorry. You know, the Braves are going to be playing. We'll be watching the Braves and the Reds during the summer. We we love to watch the the the Reds games and the Braves games. I don't want to be doing a whatnot stream. Well, that's why they have a recording devices on your TV. You're going to have to record it because again, successful people are willing to do for a short period of time. What most people aren't so they can do for the rest of their life what most people can't. Uh have your cards ready before you schedule out your shows. You know, make sure you have enough inventory. Uh, and before we started, we had 90 days of inventory ready. And then we had slabs that we, you know, we didn't have all our slabs, but we were working on them. We could get slabs as we move forward because we're doing a slab about every 15 auctions or so. Uh, so, but have your inventory ready. You know, I don't think it's a good idea to go to your card shop and go through the dollar box and pull out some cards and then come back and try to sell them that night. I think you should be a little bit ahead of it. But again, to each its own. If you start with big cards too soon, expect to get crushed. Expect to get crushed. When I was going through my hours of research before we got started and watching as many shows as we can, I cannot tell you how many times I crushed the seller. I wasn't there to crush them. But look, if you're going to sell a $75 card and nobody's bidding over 10 bucks, I'll buy it for 75. I'll buy it for $11. And I can't tell you how many cards like that I've bought. And then I just get them in and turn and some of them I added to my personal collection, but most of them I just turn around and sold them on eBay. Uh you'll get crushed if you if you're not strategic. Respect people's time. Stay brisk with your show. Keep it running. Uh do negotiations. Like if somebody says, "Well, I see you have this card in your shop. It's $50. would you take 30? No, I can't take 30. Can you do any better? And they have this back and forth conversation and everybody else is just sitting around watching and listening. It's like, do that negotiation offline after your show. When people ask me, Dale, can you do better than that? I'll usually give them a number and if they offer me less than that, I'll say, look, send shoot me an email and I'll show them my email address and we'll talk after the show. I'll talk to I'll contact you after the show. Keep it moving. Keep it moving. Fifth, this is the most important. Get outside the box. Think outside the box. Um, if you want to be successful pretty much in any business or niche, look at what everybody else is doing and do it different and ask yourself, how can I make it better? uh and in whatn not's case how can I make it more entertaining and what can I do and but you have to be authentic in whatever you're doing if you're not authentic it you have to be authentic because you don't think people see through it but they do uh one of my early mentors when I was in my 20s one of my early business mentors said you keep that which you give away you keep that which you give away you know you give compassion to somebody, you get compassion back. You keep that which you give away. And because of that, I think the most important thing that and I don't see very few people do this, very few, but I think the most important thing you can do is do giveaways. And and we do buyer giveaways as I previously mentioned, but we also do follower giveaways. you follow us uh bookmark our our our upcoming shows. We we do follow give giveaways every five minutes. Every five minutes is we keep those giveaways and and and listen, whatnot is full of people that are only there for the giveaways. They are, but some of those people I've had some people come and they they've come week two weeks in a row. All they did was get a couple of giveaways, but then they come the third week and they end up buying something and they see how we do business. They see how we communicate with people. Uh they get they're they're looking at our feedback now. They look at our ship rate. You know, our shipping goes out within 24 hours. And you know, now they're doing business with us. And I appreciate them coming, hanging out, and giving us the chance to earn their business. What can you do that no other card seller is doing? I ask myself that question almost every morning. What can I do that can that can be unique? And we're doing some things that are unique. Probably uh you know the best thing that we're doing is we do trivia. We have trivia giveaways. We do five to eight every session and it's trivia and it's it's more complex than what it sounds. Uh, you know, you don't have to be the first person to get the correct answer, but we do sports trivia and we have a trivia giveaway program that we run. Nobody else that I've seen has done this. I mean, it was it came from my I mean, something I just came up with on a whim of thinking about how can we make this more engaging for our customers and people that are hanging out with us and it's been very successful. We run what we call DND stacks, DND stacks. And and basically what we do is we will put together a stack of Pirates cards or Mets cards or some team or maybe all Hall of Famers or maybe all quarterbacks or maybe all all stars and we start it. We guarantee that in that stack and we show every card that it's a 10 to $30 eBay comp on those cards. guaranteed $10 up to $30. And every now and then, like last week, we stuck in like we had one of these go off at $41, but there was a $35 card in the stack and a couple people recognized the card and knew what they were bidding on. But we do these DND uh stacks and and and you know somebody's a pirate fan and they get some Willie Starel and maybe a Clemente and and you know Barry Bonds and and um you know whoever. And you know there's a lot of team collectors out there. There's a lot of people like to collect specific teams and these have done very well for us. We start them at $3, you know, and they do well, you know, they they might have inserts and short prints and Hall of Famers and so on and so forth, but that's something that we're running. We do about I think the last show we did, we did 15 of these special uh DND, you know, stacks. Then we also run progressive lots with slabs. And I've seen other people do this, but we do it a little bit different because we start with a slab. Maybe we'll start with a slab of Ronald Cooney Jr. and it's a graded card and it's it's say we started at $10. After the first bid, we tell people, look, we've got this Smith Sawer. This was our last show. AJ Smith saw uh up and cominging pitcher for the Braves. It was a patch card. After our first bid, guys, we're going to add more cards. You keep bidding. We'll keep adding cards. So, we'll put AJ Smith Sawyer. We'll do Matt Osen, Aussie Albbeies, and so on and so forth. We're just adding cards as people continue to bid it up. And as long as they're bidding, we'll add cards. Sometimes we might end up with 50, 60, 70 cards. and and there's been many times we don't even make back the cost of grading but people enjoyed they like participating in those and it's just part of the process right now and we're okay with that I mean again we understand what we're doing the go the first 90 days we knew we would lose money and actually our last show was our best show and I think we're actually going to make money uh from our last show. One other thing I don't know if I mentioned, let me let me go back because I have to get stronger on this if I didn't. You have to begin with the end in mind. And I want to talk about this for a second. I want to share this story. You have to have the right mindset before you sit down to do that because it can get Look, our first show at the end of it, it was totally uncomfortable. We we were fumbling our way through the whole back end and the whole process. We didn't, you know, we thought we knew what we were doing before we sat down, but it was terrible. It was absolutely terrible. And one of the things that you will hear and a question he always asks, "How was your first show?" And without hesitation, everybody says, "It was a disaster." So, you know, it takes a while to learn and and to make the uncomfortable comfortable. Guys, it's just like riding a bicycle. You didn't hop on it and ride it. You're going to fall down a few times. That's life. That's the way things are. And it can get very uncomfortable. So just be aware of that and be and and expect that. That's part of it. But what is your mindset? What are you doing? What's your first 90 days? What's your first 30 days? And my mindset was I'm going to do this for 90 days. I know I'm going to lose money, but my goal is is to to to find my audience, to find people looking for familyfriendly shows with good cards that collectors will enjoy adding to their collection. I mean, we do a lot of King Griffy Jr. and Otani and Bobby Wit Jr. and Ellie de la Cruz and Aaron Judge. a lot of very popular players is what we run. And then we also we also uh will do our our specific team stacks and our progressive lots and it and we do our trivia giveaway. And our goal right now is just to continue to build a following. Like our last show we did was our best show ever. And we had several people that had been there. this was their third or fourth time in a row that they were with us. And that's what we're trying to do. That's the goal is to provide value. Your long-term income is in direct proportion to the value you provide to the market that you serve. And I believe that. I've lived my whole life, business, career with that philosophy. But you have to you have to remind yourself before every show. Now, our first show was a goat rodeo. What we actually did, and I think this was a smart move, our official launch was January, but the day a day after Christmas, I said, "Don, we're going to go on here and get our feet wet. We're not going to do, you know, 150 cards, but we'll do 30 to 50 cards, and we'll schedule every day for five days in a row after Christmas." every day, five days in a row, because repetition is the mother of learning. And I I want to do it, make mistakes, you know, correct those mistakes, make more mistakes, correct those mistakes, and try to figure this out. So when January comes, we can start the year. We'll do two shows every week to start every Tuesday 12:15, 8:15. But let's do these five shows in a row to get our feet wet. And that's what we did. And we we we we made a ton of mistakes. After the first show, Don said, "Maybe this is not for us. Maybe this is not for us." Because we were both very uncomfortable. But we persisted through it. And you and you're probably going to have to as well. But then what happened, they were doing a special for Super Bowl weekend and we did shows on Saturday and Sunday and Sunday we ended up about 50 cards in and we went through a a a short period there. We had eight people in the room and I knew all any of them wanted was the next giveaway. That's why they were all there. They weren't even bidding on anything. And I had a huge lot of Hall of Fame quarterbacks, 18 20 cards, you know, Payton Manning, you you know, Marino, huge lot of Hall of Fame quarterbacks. I started them at $3. I got no bids at $3. There was individual cards, four or five dollar cards in that individual stack. And I got aggravated, frustrated, and I told Don, "We're going to let this last givey end. I didn't say this out loud, but we're just going to stop the show." Because it was so obvious to me that there were just eight people there waiting for the next giveaway. I was aggravated, frustrated, exhausted. Uh when the show was over, I said, "Wake me up before the Super Bowl starts." I laid down for about 354 minutes and I got up and I was so aggravated with myself. I was and I told Don, I said, "Don't ever let me stop a show like that ever again, no matter what happens, because that's not the way to do this. That's on me. It's my mindset. You got to stay focused. Keep going." And and and here's what happened. our Tuesday night show. About halfway through it, someone came on that had never been with us before, first time, and they bought 18 items during the last half of our show, and I think they'll be back. What if during that Super Bowl weekend, what if I'd gone on and just done the the other 100 auctions we had ready to go and not quit and not stopped? Who could have shown up towards the end of that show that could been a long-term customer? And you have to stay focused there. I dropped the ball. I thought I was beyond that mentally, but now when I sit down, I remind I'm going to remind myself every time I sit down before I hit that start the stream to remind myself no matter what. Keep your your focus and just go with it and the right people, you know, will show up. and just believe that the right people will find you because there are people out there looking for familyfriendly shows. And so mindset is critically important, guys. I can't even begin to explain because we've all heard the stories about people doing live streams and falling apart.
