Analysis Summary

40% Low Influence
mildmoderatesevere

“Be aware that the '10x value' framing creates a financial incentive that may lead you to overlook the risk of permanently damaging expensive collectibles with abrasive chemicals.”

Ask yourself: “What would I have to already believe for this argument to make sense?”

Transparency Mostly Transparent
Primary technique

Performed authenticity

The deliberate construction of "realness" — confessional tone, casual filming, strategic vulnerability — designed to lower your guard. When someone appears unpolished and honest, you evaluate their claims less critically. The spontaneity is rehearsed.

Goffman's dramaturgy (1959); Audrezet et al. (2020) on performed authenticity

Signals

The video features a highly authentic human narration characterized by natural stumbles, personal stories about card grading, and real-time reactions to the physical restoration process. The speech lacks the rhythmic perfection and formulaic structure typical of AI-generated scripts or synthetic voices.

Natural Speech Patterns Transcript includes filler words ('uh'), self-correction ('I don't really feel doing I don't really feel comfortable'), and a natural snort/laugh.
Personal Anecdotes The narrator references a specific personal experience with a recent order of 90 vintage cards and past mistakes with rubbing debris into cards.
Dynamic Visual Interaction The narrator reacts in real-time to finding a new diagonal scratch during the process and adjusts the lighting specifically for the camera.

Worth Noting

Positive elements

  • This video provides a clear, close-up demonstration of how abrasive polishes physically interact with the holographic surface of vintage trading cards.

Be Aware

Cautionary elements

  • The framing of 'restoration' as a simple value-add ignores the significant risk that grading companies like PSA may label these cards as 'Altered,' rendering them less valuable than the original scratched state.

Cracking my vintage slab to get better grades. Episode six. Giovani's Neidato King. Got a PSA 9 on this. Pretty good, but uh I see some scratches on it from outside the case. So, I think we can do better. Now, PSA 9 is worth about $200, but if we can get this to a 10, that's almost 10xes the value. So, we're looking at $1,500 to $1,700 in a PSA 10. Let's take a look. Yeah, immediately I can see some scratches on the hollow. They look kind of deep, so I'm a little bit unsure of that one. Uh, we got a horizontal scratch here on the gold part. Looks a little bit lighter. The edges and the rest of the card look fantastic. So, I don't think we have to do any kind of flattening or paper work here. So, let's gather our materials. I'm using Kirk's card spray polish and recovery. Links are in the description for all of these products if you guys want to try this yourself. I recommend using microfiber cloths as well. We're going to start off by doing a cleaning. Card looks pretty clean, but you never know. I just want to make sure there's nothing on the surface that I might be [snorts] accidentally rubbing into the card. I've had some bad experiences with that in the past. And soon I will do a video about errors and mistakes and what not to do. So stay tuned for that. I've got my brush, sponge, brush, loaded up with some polish, and I'm going to go ahead and do a first pass on some of these scratches here. With the recovery, we always do multiple light passes because it is very easy to overdo the recovery as it does remove material from the card and you can burn through the hollow. So, after our first pass, we've got a greatly diminished visual scratch on the top and our bottom scratch is also still there, but again, much lighter. So, that's good news. We'll go ahead and hit it with a second round. I try to do perpendicular motion. So, if the scratch is horizontal, I want to hit it vertically up and down. And I do polish the rest of the hollow just to make sure that there is an even finish to the card in general. Let's take a look at what happened with round two. Right off the bat, it's uh quite difficult to see these scratches, but they do still exist on the top. And I found a new one I didn't notice before. It's kind of going diagonal there. We'll touch that next time. And I'm pretty sure the bottom scratch is gone, but uh even though I don't have a visual, sometimes it can be hard to see at certain angles. So, I will hit that one more time as well. And this time I'm going to use very targeted circular polishing motions on all three areas. You want to make sure that you have a lot of the recovery polish on the card. I found that that helps quite a bit in achieving the end goal. And I have the lights set up on this camera set up specifically so that you can see how much material is on the card. I don't really feel doing I don't really feel comfortable doing another round of polish. I rather the recovery. So, I'm going to go ahead and hit it with the actual polish to finish this up and we'll hopefully see a finished result with no scratches. Now, the polish does just that. It adds a nice shine to the product. It may help hide visibility of some very light scratches, but I don't think that's applicable for any of the scratches we were dealing with. I'll put a before shot up in the top right corner so you can see the dramatic difference here. And our bottom scratch is also completely gone before picture for reference. So, this was a massive success in my book. We'll go ahead and ship this one out. PSA has been getting pretty tight lately. I just received an order of 90 vintage non rare cards back and not a single one got 10. So, we'll see. Good luck to the Neato King. Cool Pokemon. Very cool card. Please subscribe. I'll see you guys on the next one. Take care.
