It's a headline designed to make every gamer with a Mac stop scrolling. But if you've been in the handheld gaming scene, you know this isn't exactly new technology, and we should tread lightly before thinking this is going to be revolutionary for gaming on a Mac. So, let me introduce you to my Android gaming handheld, the Retroid Pocket G2. It's tiny. It's smaller than a Steam Deck. It's actually smaller than a Switch Light as well. Yet, I can use GameHub on this device to play Windows versions of games like Dark Souls and Mega Bonk on the go. On Android, PC gaming using GameHub is frankly far better than it should be. And what Games has done with GameHub is quite astounding because it feels like a console. It completely bypasses the clunky Steam UI and gives you a dedicated streamline environment for Windows gaming on non Windows hardware. And now, Games wants to bring that same GameHub magic to Mac OS. But before we buy into this dream, we need to talk about the reality of Windows gaming on the Mac, the power of marketing, and why free always comes with a cost. Let's be honest, Crossover needs some real competition. Codewavers, the creators of Crossover, make the best engine for playing Windows games on a Mac, but the dashboard looks a bit like a Windows 95 spreadsheet. And let's face it, the user experience is clunky. On the other hand, GameHub for Android is easy mode for a reason. Before you even launch it, you can choose the preconfigured most stable settings for a specific game, or you can turn on the highest levels of hackiness to get the best performance possible out of your game. And not only that, you can switch resolutions. You can choose exactly which versions of translation layers you want to run your game with, which might give better performance compatibility. For example, you can pick different versions of DXVK, different versions of Proton and FEX, which is Android's version of Rosetta 2, which allows x86 games to work on the ARM chip. And you can also choose GPU drivers. And you can even download the latest versions without leaving the interface. And in game as well, you can do things like limit the frame rate of your game or toggle the performance HUD and even customize it in game. It's a really fantastic interface reminiscent of how you might play Windows games on a Steam Deck. Now, if Games can bring this level of UI polish to the Mac, handling configured launch parameters and giving us a true consolelike feel, it's going to make Crossover look ancient. Codew Weavers needs to start taking their user interface and marketing seriously because Gameser is coming for their launch. But before we get too excited, remember that GameHub hasn't been released yet. We don't have much information. All we have are Games marketing images. And I think that they're somewhat misleading. For example, in their announcement, they showed that Bouldersgate 3, Blackm Wukong, and God of War Rocknarok running on Mac. Now, here's the reality check. Boulders 3 is already Mac native. It has been for years, so no translation layers are required. and Blackmmith Wukong and God of War. They've been playable on Mac via crossover for over a year now. Game Hub isn't unlocking these games, it's just putting them in a prettier box. And about that proprietary AI frame interpolation claim, I'm highly skeptical. On Android, translation is easier because Vulcan is native on that platform. However, on Mac, everything has to be translated through Metal, Apple's proprietary graphics API. And I'm dubious that GameHub has some secret AI source that surpasses the technical foundations of Wine and Gameporting toolkit, the major components of Crossover. And it's likely that GameHub on Mac, it's just going to be a well optimized wrapper of existing open-source scaling tech. And here's what GameHub aren't telling you at the moment. It fundamentally cannot fix the things that are wrong with Windows gaming on a Mac through Crossover at the moment. Since GameHub on Mac will almost certainly be using the same tech stack as Crossover and similar to the technology used on Android, including Wine, Proton, and FEX, it's hitting the same brick walls as everyone else. If a game requires kernel level antiche, it's not going to work on Mac OS. Valerant, Ricochet, Easy Antiche, GameHub can't AI around a security lockout. If the antiche doesn't support Windows translation layers, then the game is going to stay broken on Mac no matter what. And then there's the privacy angle. On my Retroid Project G2, I don't even use the standard version of GameHub. I use GameHub Light, which is an open- source cleaner version of the software. But why? Because the official app is notorious for heavy telemetry, collecting data, and phoning home constantly back to China. If Games wants to bring that same data hungry behavior to your Mac, do you really want to be logging into it using your Steam credentials? But the biggest danger is the ecosystem. Games is a hardware company. They want to sell you controllers. Noticeably in the marketing, there's a big gap for where the controller is going to be. Presumably, this is a game set controller. They're not really interested in writing code for wine or fixing bugs on the translation layers. That's what code weavers do. And paying for crossover pays for the developers who do all of the heavy lifting for Wine and Windows gaming on Mac. If we all jump ship to a pretty free rapper, we stop the funding of people who actually build the Windows gaming engine on Mac. If Codew Weavers loses the funding to keep wine moving forward, Game Hub has nothing left to wrap. It's a parasitic relationship that could end up starving the very technology that makes Mac gaming possible. So, I really want a slick user interface like the GameHub UI. I think we all want a more console-like feel for Windows gaming on a Mac, but I'm not really ready to trade the future of Mac gaming for a shiny new dashboard that gives nothing back to the developers. Competition is great and I hope it forces crossover to evolve. But until I see a light version of GameHub for Mac that respects my privacy and proves it isn't just a parasite on the open source community, I'm sticking with the people who actually write the code. And in that case, you might as well just go ahead and buy Crossover and support the future of Windows gaming on Mac. Anyway, let me know in the comments what you think about the situation.
