I went [music] through 12 years of trying and failing to have babies. Uh I went through a long [music] fertility journey and experienced recurrent miscarriage. And [music] when I started out on that journey, I felt a great deal of shame around [music] it. And I didn't feel that I could share what I was going through. And when you don't feel you can share, it's a very alienating [music] position to be in and you end up feeling very alone. The moment that I decided [music] to take the risk of sharing, whether it was writing about it or talking about it in a podcast or simply [music] conversing with a friend or a loved one, the moment I did that, that was [music] the moment that I felt less alone because connection is forged through [music] vulnerability. And there is a solidarity that comes from that. I now feel part of a community [music] of women and men who have walked similar paths. And there's so much strength and power that comes from that.

Video description

Best-selling author and podcast supremo Elizabeth Day has helped lead important conversations about infertility and miscarriage and spoken candidly about her own experiences and her acceptance that she will not have children. The journalist and broadcaster spoke about the strength it took for her to share her journey, as she features on The Independent’s Influence List this International Women’s Day. Reflecting on 12 years of trying to have a baby, the broadcaster said she initially felt unable to speak about her experience. “When I started out on that journey, I felt a great deal of shame around it. I didn't feel that I could share what I was going through,” the journalist said. “The moment that I decided to take the risk of sharing… I felt less alone because connection is forged through vulnerability. I now feel part of a community of women and men who have walked similar paths, and there's so much strength and power that comes from that.” Photo credit: Sane Seven Watch more on Independent TV: https://tinyurl.com/yc7ukx9n The Independent is the world’s most free-thinking newsbrand, providing global news, commentary and analysis for the independently-minded.
