If you just decide, I'm going to go on a carnivore diet for the next 30 days starting right now, you'lling lose weight and you'll feel amazing. >> Yeah. >> I just don't know if it's a way to eat all the time. >> No, that's the thing. It's like it seems like an extreme thing that I would not be >> willing to maintain. >> I mixed in a little fruit. I eat fruit because I find when I don't do that, I I did straight carnivore for the first few days, like I think like the first eight or nine days, but it was uh it's hard. I was slogging through workouts, just no energy. >> Yeah. >> When I wrote The Carnivore Code, and this is humbling, but when I wrote the book, I was of the opinion that carbohydrates were not great for humans. And over time, I learned personally doing a carnivore diet of meat, organs, and fat, and salt for a year and a half that including carbohydrates in my diet improved my health from that. After about a year to a year and a half of a carnivore diet, I began to notice issues probably in my case arising due to electrolyte insufficiency. This led to muscle cramps. I had problems with sleep. I had heart palpitations, fluttering of my heart. I had something called hypnogogic jerks where I would fall asleep but jerk myself awake. And I had the sense that I was cold or a little bit cold all the time. And when I looked at my labs, my thyroid levels, specifically my total T3 and free T3 were not ideal. >> I quit the carnivore diet. Going out to eat or going to social events can be pretty limiting when you're trying to avoid things like seed oils or you're trying to avoid other types of carbohydrate sources. It's like you can pretty much cross Italian off the list. Cons for me, what I found was that it was extremely difficult for me to eat enough food to gain weight, which I needed to in order to actually build muscle. >> I didn't have the energy. I didn't have my libido. >> I just can't do it anymore for several reasons. Number one, just some practical stuff, but also some more serious reasons that could impact my health. >> Welcome, Dr. Brite. Today's video, I really wanted to explore a topic that I've been seeing a lot lately on my socials. When I open Instagram and YouTube, the content that I see is frequently content that is about carnivore diet. And what I've been seeing a lot lately is people coming out and saying the carnivore diet doesn't work for them or that they had to quit the carnivore diet. And it's usually these top three reasons: fatigue, continued hormone issues or their hormone issues just not healing up. And third, not just low energy but also poor sleep. So from your experience, are these actually failures of the carnivore diet or is it how they approached it? So it's how they approached it because people who go carnivore often don't add enough fat. So they'll start eating 5 pounds of meat or a couple pounds of meat and you really have to allow your body to switch metabolisms. If you're you can only have two kinds of metabolism. You can have glycolysis or ketosis. Glycolysis is burning carbohydrates or protein because excess protein turns into glucose, right? Or burning ketones, burning fat. So, if you haven't allowed that your metabolism to switch, it usually only takes 24 to 30 hours, right? But if you don't add enough fat and you're eating a lot of protein, you're kind of still almost eating a high carbohydrate diet, but your body hates to burn protein because it doesn't want to burn its own tissue. It wants to turn that protein into muscle or enzymes or peptides. So, you're kind of on on a metabolic fence. Your body doesn't know whether to burn protein or glucose and your liver is going to make glucose eventually. How do you train your body to do it the right way? >> You eat more fat. You eat enough fat. I mean, eating eating just protein, eating just a piece of ribeye if you're healing isn't going to do it. You have to eat the fat to get to a certain point of being healed or I mean I usually recommend a higher fat diet than what people may think is carnivore. Carnivore people think carnivore is just eating steaks and animal protein, right? Does this apply to not just women but also men? >> Yes, absolutely. Inflammation, cholesterol is an anti-inflammatory. If you're in a stress state, what happens then? Your liver makes sugar. So, you don't have to eat sugar. your liver can be making sugar. So that is very that the fat prevents a blood sugar roller coaster. So if you all of a sudden take out carbohydrates, if you were eating a lot of carbohydrates, right, and you're eating just steak, your body's used to this stimulant in the form of sugar. And then it's just trying to figure out what to metabolize. that will cause sleep issues because you need to have balanced, stable, rock solid blood sugar to sleep because that's when your liver is going to make sugar or it will cause fatigue issues. Hormones, I don't I'm not sure what you can mean, but all hormones need to be balanced with fat. If you've been following Dr. Elizabeth Bright, you probably know that getting a one-on-one consultation with her currently means waiting up to 7 months. That's how in demand and booked out she is, and for good reason, because Dr. Elizabeth Bright is one of the most trusted voices in this space. and someone who truly cares about helping each and every one of you. Now, while she's already written two incredible books with a third one on the way, we know some of you are still craving that personal connection with her. That is why I am so beyond thrilled to announce something brand new. Dr. Elizabeth Brightite and I are teaming up to launch an exclusive all-new community workshop led by Dr. Brite herself. This will actually be the only way to work directly with Dr. Brite from now on. Dr. Brite will no longer be taking one-on-one consultations as she would like to focus on guiding people in group settings. If you'd like to attend her group coaching calls, make sure you check out the links down below in the description box. You will not only get to ask her questions every single week, but you will also get guidance and troubleshooting based on your lab work. We look forward to working with you. So, what a lot of these influencers publicly claim, whether it be about healing or just getting healthy, losing weight, many of them tried carnivore for vanity. So, they want to lose as much weight as possible and look super fit. Now, why is it so important to shift the goal from just losing weight, wanting to look good to actually getting healthy? And how does that change someone's long-term success on carnivore? You'll never look good if you're not healthy. This I mean, you know, it's sort of a it's it doesn't work that way. Health, someone who exudes health, who has rosy cheeks or who, you know, who has good skin, that's because they're healthy. Um, excess atipose tissue is a sign that something's a miss in your physiology. Something's not working properly, something's imbalanced. So, you're for the rest of your life. Yeah. If you address your health uh issues now, that's why, you know, the book talks about thyroid and adrenal issues. It starts often when women get their periods too young. Women are supposed to get their period at 16, 18. Most of my patients get it at 10, 11, 12, 13. You're already messed up your endocrine system. It became messed up for you. >> So, you're saying the only way to fix and heal that endocrine system is high fat and specifically highfat carnivore. >> If you're nine and you have a thyroid nodule or your mother's hypothyroid and the child can't sleep, that usually means that they should definitely be eating more meat. They don't have to. I mean they can have some fruit. It doesn't have they are met more metabolically healthy than somebody who's 40 or 50 or 30 even. The highfat carnivore it's the best way to eat for the rest of your life. But if you're a child or a teenager maybe you don't need to go as far as you know 20 just because you're so metabolically healthy. Can you also talk about this whole mentality of when something is not working or you're not getting the healing that you are looking for after going carnivore, you shouldn't be pushing harder. You shouldn't be working harder in the gym. You shouldn't be fixing even harder. Instead, you should take a step back and focus on resting and calming down more. So, can you explain why that is so important? >> All right. So, if you've been eating a SAD diet all your life or you have had endocrine issues, um if you've had any kind of mental health issues during adolescence or you had any kind of u menstrual issues or you know anything like that would mean that you're already have a blood sugar issue and a hormone issue. Now, going into changing how you eat is very powerful. It will create a lot of healing, but at the same time, you do have to rest because you're regenerating. Remember when people used to have um you know tuberculosis, they would go away for 6 months and lie on sheds and then people would cover them with blankets and mean they didn't go to the gym and work out. They would have people put, you know, wet towels on them and lower their inflammation that way. So this pushing is a very new this this pushing in the gym thing really comes from when they took our fat away and people started eating more carbohydrates and people got heavier. So then they said, "Oh, we don't want to admit that you need that fat to be healthy that you're supposed to be eating diet that has fat. We're just going to make you go to the gym because it's going to be calories in, calories out." So people didn't used to um work out, they used to work. So this whole exercise thing is quite new. What if we put it in the perspective of a mom? Maybe she's a new mom. She already has a the first baby that she's raising and then she just gave birth. There's no way that she can just step back, calm down, slow down and really focus on recovering and resting. If it's a lifestyle like that, what do you suggest? >> Babies, small children are very need a lot of energy. Um, absolutely a highfat carnivore diet will give you, you see, cholesterol is something that gives you extra energy. Fat gives you extra energy. It's an anti-inflammatory and you build hormones out of it. That's really the way to go. The more stressed you have, the more fat you need. Since you are the fat expert, many beginners go way under the required fat that they need to begin with. So, from your perspective, what is the best way to raise fat intake gradually so the body can actually adapt smoothly and be able to digest it as best as possible? >> All right. So, I don't really think that you have to um increase it gradually. If you have an issue, diarrhea, things like that, that's really because you your digestive system isn't working properly, and that's often because of low bile function, uh your liver is not making enough bile, your pancreatic enzymes are not producing adequately, that may be because they've been confused by all the crap you've been eating and now you're eating, you know, fat and meat. So maybe sometimes that causes um not being able to break down the fat initially but mostly this is because of a thyroid issue because in a hypothyroid state you have no bile no enzymes. All of that microbiome that's you know everybody's always talking about vasoactive peptide all of those things are ruled by thyroid hormone and regulated by thyroid hormone. How long would you say realistically it will take to train the body to use fat as fuel? We know scientifically that it's about 20 24 to 30 hours. I mean, if a person is burning sugar and the next day they don't eat any and they eat fat, you can just tell by their glucose levels that unless their liver is producing a lot of sugar that they're in ketosis. So, we're talking about breaking it down. We know it's going to burn ketones are going to turn, you know, the fat's going to turn into ketones. Some people have so much cortisol level, you know, such irregular cortisol levels, their liver keeps making sugar and they can't get into ketosis. So, there's a lot more going on than just the time really. I really think that it doesn't take much time at all. I think that there are other issues going on for a person not to be able to uh break down the fat. >> When people say, "I don't know how to be fat adapted," or, "How do I know when I'm fat adapted?" What is your answer to that? Like, how does someone know? >> I used to have people measure their ketone levels. I don't really do that anymore because there's so much so many of confounding things going on when you're, you know, stressed or, you know, things like that. Now, if you're going to measure ketone levels, measure after a a fatty meal in the morning, your liver has made a ton of sugar in the night. So, you're going to do, you know, fasting glucose, fasting insulin. It's invariably going to be high. It doesn't mean you're not in ketosis. I don't really have people check their ketones anymore. A lot of people want to. not the breath analyzer at all. You definitely want to prick your finger to see the ketone levels in your blood, but usually there is so much going on in healing. You can't just say, "Oh, am I in ketosis? Am I fat adapted?" There's so much going on. There's like a a ripple effect through your entire system that you do have to be patient. Not just in ketosis, out of ketosis. It's also all of this negative feedback response in your body that is used to the status quo being one way eating carbohydrates and not addressing not having enough fat to make hormones and all of a sudden your body has to figure out what to do with it. Before we get to the most important part of the video, I want to make sure all of you carnivores and especially all you new carnivores are making sure to address your electrolytes because even if you follow all of my best carnivore tips, sometimes just eating meat isn't enough during that initial adaptation phase. If any of these symptoms are happening to you, like headaches, muscle cramping, low energy, lower endurance in the gym, this could just be a simple electrolyte imbalance. You either can salt all of your meals a little bit heavier and see if that resolves the issue, or just lean on a high quality electrolyte supplement. This right here is the one that I recommend. It's from the brand Element, specifically labeled raw, unflavored. And this one does not have any stevia or flavorings, just the three electrolytes our body needs. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium measured out in the right quantities. This is what each of the packets look like. You just rip one open, pour in whatever you're drinking, mix it up, drink it down, and you're good to go. You all can get a free sample pack like this with any purchase. If you go to the URL shown on the screen, drinklement.com/sbg. I've also linked them down below. I don't like to say like there's only one right way to do a carnivore diet or you're doing carnivore diet wrong because that typically makes people very offended. But I totally agree with you, Dr. Bright. And I see these videos and reels of people coming out that they had to quit the carnivore diet. And I actually see a lot of comments under my own content as well, saying, "Carnivore diet didn't work for me. I gave it a good 30 days." And then I investigate further. It's always because I look at their meals. Where is the fat? Right? They're eating a lot of chicken or they're eating a lot of lean beef or they're just eating very little amounts, you know, >> right? And it's so unfortunate because maybe they just didn't have the guidance or the knowledge to know that not only should be you be eating a lot a lot of fat, especially at the start, but you should be making sure you're eating plenty of food. So then can you address the topic of how so many people are probably undereating in general as well, but they don't know it. Why is that such a big issue? I mean the undereating part are are most of these people trying to lose weight? Are they trying to achieve some physical ideal that they see in a magazine um or on I'm sorry that's very old-fashioned on Instagram on YouTube. We're supposed to just wake up in the morning and listen to our senses. So our hunger signals are supposed to be healthy and tell us what to eat. But our hunger signals have become so confused because of high sugar, taking substances, be it medications, overex exercising. If you get up at 4:00 in the morning to go to the gym, you are in a stressed state. You know, that's when your cortisol is supposed to be very low and it's supposed to start rising very gently. What's your liver going to do? It's just going to make sugar and then eventually if your cortisol is too low, there will be a powerful insulin response which will push that sugar down and then the liver does it again. So, all of these things can affect how um how you feel. Now being too lean, you're supposed to have a little bit of fat on you to survive stress. You're supposed to I don't no one can have a stressf free life. In fact, we push ourselves. Humans are now with our society and our dopamine addiction to Instagram and things like that. We are in a stress state um almost constantly. So that's also going to cause your body to have a negative feedback response to that by producing more sugar to make you run be able to run from danger. So that atapost tissue you need some on you. If you're too lean you cannot address stress. >> How does chronically undereating affect hormone function? >> It prevents thyroid function completely. It will completely disregulate steroid hormone function. So thyroid is like a growth growth hormone. It's a building hormone. It's a regenerating hormone. It helps you build your bones. It helps you your skin. Why why are there so many skin issues in a hypothyroid state? Because your skin is not keeping you alive. If you only have a tiny bit of thyroid hormone, it's going to be focused on your heart, your lungs keeping you alive. The skin your body doesn't care about. So if you're undereating, you're not getting enough. Your thyroid will start turning off regeneration. Makes sense. Why do you think I get so many questions every week in my calls from people saying, "I started the carnivore diet, but my hair is falling. Why does hair fall out? It's a thyroid issue now." Okay, so iron and hair, iron and thyroid. Iron is always a thyroid issue if you have don't have enough iron. Any kind of anemia is a thyroid issue. Now, a lot of people who go carnivore didn't know they were hypothyroid because they were shoving their thyroid levels up with with uh sugar. I've actually had patients who came to me with moderately okay thyroid levels go on a carnivore diet that T3 can go down just because they've removed stimulants. So then your body will react. It's also a stress reaction. your your body is saying if you're if you're too lean or you're under stress, your hair doesn't keep you alive. It's as I said, it's your heart, your lungs that keeps you alive. The bottom of your heels, uh your extremities, the skin, your nails, those things are not going to get the nutrients they need if you're undereating or if you're not eating enough fat to balance your hormones. I just wanted to shout out something I have been using every single day to protect my skin, my eyes, and overall my recovery. The first thing that I really want to talk about that has truly been life-changing for my eyes are Bon Chararg's blue blocking glasses. So, they have so many different styles. They have all of the colors. I recommend these yellow ones for daytime and these red ones that I wear most of the time, the moment it starts getting dark outside and all throughout the night. So, if I were to recommend just one biohacking product, it's going to be these red blue blocking glasses because they have seriously made such a big difference in my sleep quality and my ability to fall asleep quicker. You may not know this, but all of the light in our devices, laptops, TVs, iPhones are filled with harmful blue light. When you are staring at these bright blue lights close to bedtime, it actually prevents your body from winding down and being able to fall asleep and stay asleep. Besides these blue blocking glasses. I also, as you all know, love to take care of my skin. So, Boncharge has different types of red light devices, I really like the red light face mask because all I have to do is just wrap it around my head and I can forget about it, do more work, chill in bed, watch some TV with my husband. It really helps my skin calm down. So, here in Las Vegas, it is extremely dry, like bone dry climate. I just put on my Red Light face mask and it really helps calm, soothe, hydrate my skin. So, I love the way it makes my skin feel and look. Bon Charge has given me a discount code for all of you guys who want to try out their biohacking products. Click the link down below in the description box and use my discount code SBG A for a discount on your order. So, a lot of the people who decide to quit the carnivore diet explain that it's because their lab work totally went out of whack. You know, we often see people say, "Well, stop what you're doing on carnivore diet if your labs aren't normal." Even though I talk about my labs proudly, yes, my LDL is high, but my triglycerides are low. HDL is really good, and I feel extremely healthy. I feel more more amazing than I've ever felt. But most of the world when they see videos like that, they think I'm crazy and that I'm focusing on the wrong things and that eventually I'm going to kill myself. Just things like that. I hear it every day. Now, you've said before that population reference ranges don't always apply to healthy carnivores. Can you explain how normal might not always mean optimal and what people should really be focusing on? >> Some things are tested that shouldn't be tested. There was a doctor in in um a pathologist, I'm sorry, in Britain who said, "Don't go to a hospital when you're over 40 because they're going to find something." But the lab reference ranges are basically a um compilation of statistics for unhealthy people. So, the healthy people and certainly the carnivores aren't there. They're not represented. their labs are not have never been studied. So the ranges are really not very helpful in that sense. I think how you feel is very important. But if you come to me with or came to me with an issue, I can tell things from um you know labs for instance people will have um high liver enzymes that can be a thyroid issue or you can have bigger red blood cells on a carnivore diet. You can have higher iron on a carnivore diet. it doesn't necessarily mean that there's something wrong. And you put up something recently about the cut off used to be 300. That's what I go by. Most doctors the cut off I mean for all doctors the cutoff was 300. If you were higher than that you were a hypothyroid. So it is important to I do think triglycerally they've figured out how to measure something and now they just you know that's all they care about and they wanted to give you stats. Before we wrap things up, Dr. Right. Let's get excited again about our community that we will be launching together. And it's going to finally be a place that anyone can go to to get the access to you that they need easily. When I visited Dr. Bright in Italy just a few weeks back, I realized that Dr. Bright's wait list if you want to see her, you need to wait like at least half a year to actually see her and work with her directly. So, what do you hope to achieve with this group? very happy about this because it's very uncomfortable for people to have to wait so long and I know people do need help and that's why I wrote the book. So in combination with a book in the group I'll be able to answer a lot more questions. I'll be a lot more available. There'll be recordings of questions that other people have asked. So I think it's very helpful and it's a really great step forward. Group is linked down below as well right next to Dr. Bright's third and new book. Thank you all so much for watching today's video, and I hope to see you in my next one. SPG out.
